Don’t mess with asbestos !!!!
If is cracked and broke up you need to have it a abated . $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If it is chipping and flaking get it real damp and use latex type gloves clean it up and put it in zip lock bags along with any thing that you used to clean it up including the gloves. Wear a good respirator. When done wet the filters in the respirator and remove them and put then in the bags too, then us a damp rag and clean the respiratory..

If it is flat and and is just ugly. Buy a good sealer and seal the floor, then install a wall to wall rug or free floating floor over it.

was there ever a rubbery like material that contained asbestos in the subfloor?

Not that I have ever heard of. I would however recommend wearing a respirator in for a few bucks you can get a Tyvek suit that will cover you from head to toe and if you’re careful and bag up everything as you go and vacuum well, you should be okay even if there is some. Don’t forget the goggles and gloves.

I am a homeowner, and have some non-friable asbestos ducts running from my furnace that i need to remove before getting my new furnace installed. I DO NOT have the money to pay an abatement service. I know how to dispose of the asbestos, and know where to dispose of it, but I don’t know how to go about it, and am having problems finding such info on the web. HELP!?

Take the ducts out in the largest pieces you can as not to make dust by breaking it up. Use a spray bottle of water on the ducts to keep them wet this keeps it from becoming friable. Do not use a saw, grinder or other tool that will throw the asbestos into the air. It is a good thing to also wear a dust mask when doing this. Do not forget to put the pieces in plastic 6mm bags.

Asbestos in floor ????????????????????

I went to homedepot for new flooring. they said they won’t remove the lenolium in the?
kitchen or bathroom unless it is tested for Asbestos. since the rest of the house is carpet it is ok. they said this is a law and law is one yr old. if i had it done last yr I didn’t have to find an specialist to do it. and if it has asbestos it will be very costly.
has any body done the asbestos test? what company? i live in california. last yr I removed half of the lenolium sheet in my bathroom and replaced it with vinyl tiles. if it had asbestos were I dead by now? thanks.

First of all, if Home Depot is anything like Lowe’s, do not get them to install anything in your house. They charge you a ridiculous fee for hiring a company that you can find yourself in your yellow pages because they’re not happy just selling you the material. Call a local flooring company and you’ll save a lot of money.

Ask friends for referrals so that get a decent one.

As far as the asbestos is concerned you only have two choices. Do it right and pay dearly or do it like last year. Your decision.

One contractor says he will tear up my old kitchen flooring and “don’t worry about it.” Another says he can’t do it because it definitely contains asbestos because it was installed in 1984. He wants to encapsulate the existing floor and lay a 1/4 ” on top of that. Obviously the latter contractor wants more money. Who is right?

Very doubtful if it does. But you can call 1- 800 -274 -3266 to contact them. M-F 9-5 EST . Most vinyl that contained asbestos was in the VCT 12×12 ( approx) size squares. I don t ever recall sheet goods having asbestos and most all was out lawed anyway in late 70s. Won t hurt to call anyway . If this is the only layer of flooring down you can go over it once w/ the luan and vinyl. GL

Agree w/ angie, but would add.
An independent tester’s responsibility is to determine whether it’s there or not in a basic survey.
When looking around , see if they can & will cite local codes & issue a report on remedies which you can wave at the realtor & owner in case they were not “aware” of any responsibility.
If you have concerns the few extra $$ for a full out report & remedy recommendation can be handed to contractors for bidding purposes.
Best regards

Asbestos removal professional

Asbestos is one of the scariest and frightening things that we can ever find in our homes. Asbestos is a mineral which is made up of millions of very tiny fibres. The problem with these fibres is that they are so small they can easily become airborne.

If the fibres are inhaled then they can cause many health complaints, many of which are ultimately fatal. If anyone is exposed to a high amount of asbestos fibres in the air then there is a much bigger risk that this person will develop cancer or other related conditions. Asbestos is seen as a very dangerous substance, and although there have been no safe thresholds identified, it is very important to avoid all contact with it.

Diseases caused by asbestos

Some of the most common diseases that are caused by asbestos exposure can include things like:

Lung Cancer

Stomach Cancer

Colon Cancer

Mesothelioma

Asbestosis

Mesothelioma is an extremely rare type of cancer that only seems to affect people that have been exposed to asbestos. It is almost always fatal.

Asbestosis is where the fibres from the asbestos have cause scarring to the lungs, making them much less efficient.

Sometimes if asbestos is not disturbed then it will cause no harm to you or your family. However if you do have asbestos then it is important to get it seen to as quickly as possible. When dealing with asbestos it is very important that you do not disturb the asbestos at all, make sure you don’t cut, crush, drill, sand or saw anything that contains asbestos.

If you have asbestos floors then do not try to sand it down to a certain level. If there is any dust that might contain asbestos fibres then do not sweep or vacuum it up. You should also never dispose of asbestos waste with normal rubbish.

Hiring a professional

If you have any asbestos anywhere in your home, or suspect that you might then it’s important to hire a professional. Although asbestos in good condition poses very little concern, if it is left to deteriorate and become dust then this will be potentially fatal. Asbestos was a very popular material for insulating homes right up until the mid 1980’s, which means a large proportion of homes potentially have asbestos. Asbestos was used for a number of different things, including insulation, floor tiles, and in various other building materials. Removing this yourself would mean that you are exposing yourself to risks, you do not have the relevant training or the necessary safety equipment which will mean more of the asbestos will get broken up, which ultimately means you will breathe more of the asbestos in making it more likely you will suffer from health problems.

One of the companies that you might like to consider hiring is A1 Asbestos Removal , you can learn more about these services offered by this company on their website which can be found at www.a1asbestos.com.au. They offer asbestos removal services throughout Australia, including asbestos removal Queensland and asbestos removal Brisbane

How can I determine when sheet vinyl flooring was installed? I have asbestos concerns.?

I have a 435 sf room laid with sheet vinyl that reeks of cat. I need to pull it up, but I am concerned that it might have asbestos backing. Can you tell from the style how old it is? Here is a photo of the floor:

https://sites.google.com/a/iastate.edu/briansalmonspics/sheetvinyl4b.JPG

I also pried up a small piece of the floor to see if I could tell if it was asbestos backed. I know lab testing would be more conclusive, but can you tell from these photos whether asbestos might be present?

https://sites.google.com/a/iastate.edu/briansalmonspics/sheetvinyl1b.JPG

https://sites.google.com/a/iastate.edu/briansalmonspics/sheetvinyl2b.JPG

You can t tell by looking at it , by the style usually. It would have to be 25+ years old to have asbestos in it. Some but not many sheet goods had asbestos in it so that brings the chance down more. More solid vinyl squares had it than sheet goods.
The links you provided , go to an Iowa State web site, but if you go through my avatar and provide me with some pictures, I ll be glad to see if I happen to recognize the print.
Another tip, if its plain sheet goods , were there is more of a paper or felt type backing, chances are slim that it doesn t have asbestos.

Scientists Research Potential Treatment of Mesothelioma Cells

An article published in the Journal of Translational Medicine in May 2008, brought to light research that is being conducted by several Italian scientists, which exposes the possibility of treatment for mesothelioma cancer with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs, NSAIDs, are anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs often found in small doses in common pain relieving over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin. Scientists used a combination of two of the NSAIDs, Piroxicam and cisplatin (CDDP), and found the results produced anti-tumoral activity within malignant mesothelioma cancer cells.

The research, considered by some to be breakthrough research for victims of mesothelioma cancer, will continue to be studied but the initial results highlighted a significant and positive trend toward cancer cell repression and prevention, particularly for malignant mesothelioma. Scientists with this study also found that the potential for determining a specific molecular target of mesothelioma cells, because of these drugs’ anti-tumor effects, could lead to advances in therapy treatments of the deadly cancer.

What is Malignant Mesothelioma Cancer?

There are several varieties of mesothelioma cancer, however, malignant mesothelioma is considered one of the most lethal. According to the study, “prognosis is poor and patients have a median survival of a few months in either treated or untreated cases.” Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer with malignant cancer cells forming on the sac lining of the chest or abdomen, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is often associated with exposure to airborne asbestos particles and fibers, which increases the risk of malignant mesothelioma developing in an individual.

Signs and Symptoms of Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is often marked by several symptoms including lumps in abdomen, weight loss, pain or swelling in the abdomen, pain under the rib cage and difficulties breathing. The cancer can also often cause fluid retention in the abdomen or around the lungs. The cancer often has symptoms similar to other conditions making misdiagnosis of the condition common.

Medical professionals have even admitted that malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer are very similar and differentiating between the two is difficult, however, there is an array of tests that physicians can use to increase the potential for a more accurate diagnosis. Tests for diagnosis may include the patient enduring physical exams, chest x-rays, biopsy of body tissues, getting a complete blood count (CBC), cytologic exam, which is an exam of cells under a microscope, or a bronchoscopy procedure where a bronchoscope is inserted into the nose or mouth for a better view of airways.

Diagnosing and Treating Malignant Mesothelioma

While treatments for mesothelioma are rare in and of themselves, it becomes increasingly difficult to treat malignant mesothelioma because of the severity of the condition. However, medical professionals take into consideration several factors prior to treatment to determine a patient’s prognosis. The following is a detailed list of these factors, according to the NCI:

* The stage of cancer, which includes stage I or localized malignant mesothelioma or advanced malignant mesothelioma that includes stage II, stage III and stage IV.

* The size of a tumor.

* Potential for tumor removal through a surgical procedure.

* The amount of fluid gathered in the chest or abdomen.

* A victim’s age, physical health and previous health issues.

* Type of mesothelioma cancer.

* Whether a cancer is reoccurring or just recently diagnosed.

Additionally, a doctor will likely look at whether or not the cancer has spread to other various parts of the body and the most common ways that the cancer spreads are through bodily tissues, the lymph system or through veins and capillaries within the blood stream.

Treatments for malignant mesothelioma can range from surgery to therapy, including chemotherapy and biological therapy to clinical trials, although the outcome is based on the progression of the cancer and most often, individuals are not aware of their condition until it reaches an advanced and, usually, an untreatable stage.

Asbestos Exposure and What to Do

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was used heavily in a range of building materials from vinyl flooring to insulation. It was prized for its inexpensive production costs and fire-retardant ability making it ideal among construction companies. However, it was discovered that inhaling elevated concentrations of airborne asbestos contributed to the development of mesothelioma cancer.

Unfortunately, this discovery came far too late, as millions of Americans working in the industry were exposed and millions more continue to remain at risk for exposure as asbestos still exists in homes, schools, apartment complexes and dozens of other types of buildings across the country. Individuals who believe they may have been exposed to asbestos particles and fibers should seek medical attention as soon as possible. If mesothelioma is the outcome it is advisable for a patient to receive consultation from an experienced mesothelioma attorney, as the potential for a mesothelioma lawsuit may exist with the opportunity for monetary compensation.

What Is Asbestos???

What is Asbestos???

Asbestos was used in a wide range of products manufactured between the 1940s and the 1980s. Asbestos has been used in sheeting/cladding, roofing, thermal and electrical insulation, molded fittings, water cisterns, rainwater gutters, down pipes, pressure pipes, underground drainage and sewer pipes, sills, copings, chalkboards, fascias, infill panels, cement pipe and sheets, floor tiles, gaskets, friction materials, coatings, plastics, textiles, paper, and other products (ATSDR 2001, NICNAS 1999). Asbestos is popular among building industry because of the following factors: cost effective, high chemical and physical resilience.

Asbestos is a natural fiber which can float in air. High levels of exposure to these fibres over a prolonged period of time increase the likelihood of respiratory diseases like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Australian government is taking tremendous steps to increase awareness about asbestos. The Queensland Government’s Asbestos Management and Control Policy for Government Buildings requires the progressive removal of high risk ACM, with an overall objective of eventually having asbestos-free workplaces in government controlled buildings.

Most of the products made now a days do not contain asbestos. However products which are made before 1970s contains asbestos, many types of building products and insulation materials used in homes contained asbestos. These are the products that might have contained asbestos in the past, and conditions which may release fibres: Steam pipes, boilers, furnace ducts, floor titles, cement sheet, millboard, door gaskets, sound proofing, decorative materials, patching and joint compounds, textured paints, asbestos cement roofing, shingles, siding, fireproof gloves, stove-top pads, ironing board covers, automobile break pads and linings, clutch facings, gaskets etc.

Asbestos containing material is difficult to identify, the only accurate method to confirm the presence of asbestos is through laboratory testing. So don’t hesitate call an asbestos inspector for a complete inspection of your building.

Can I Install Bamboo Over a Vinyl Tile On Plywood Floor

“Can I install bamboo over a vinyl tile on plywood floor?”, I hear you ask. To make a long story short, the answer is both yes and no, but don’t get confused! The reasons are a few and the solutions exact, as all is based on common sense more than anything else.

So, what’s the long story? Well, the reason why you can install a bamboo floor over vinyl glued on a plywood subfloor is simple. The plywood acts as a perfect medium that provides shock absorption and increases the structural integrity of the whole base of the floor. The vinyl on the other hand is a perfect moisture insulation, something that any experienced builder knows well.

But? Yes, there’s a “but” unfortunately. If your plywood is in top condition, no exposed nails, no loose or rotten boards, you’re almost there. If your vinyl tiles are in top condition, glued uniformly, covering all edges well, without any sort of mildew or contamination, you’re good to go! But what if that’s no the case?

Fixing a vinyl floor to prepare it as sub-floor for that shiny new bamboo floor does not take much effort, but it does take a careful observation and approach. Are there deep gouges? Any cuts that go all through the vinyl? Any loose tiles or perhaps places that have sunk down in what looks like a shallow hole? Look for that to recognize problems with the plywood underneath, because if there’s such a problem, you’d have no option but to remove the vinyl and fix the plywood.

If the plywood looks and feels OK, but the vinyl doesn’t, there’s still some things you can do. Using a flooring filler to cover irregularities is most often the choice, especially with beveled and textured vinyl tiles where it becomes mandatory. You must always aim to have as uniform and smooth surface as possible before laying down the bamboo floor.

And just in case you run out of options and end up removing vinyl tiles – please take precautions to avoid contaminating yourself and your house with possible asbestos fumes. It can’t be stressed enough, despite it being mentioned all the time. The consequences can be grim, so take your time to test your old vinyl floor if you’re not sure what it contains.

The Best Tips In Dealing With Dirty Asbestos Properties And Materials

Since it is hard to determine first hand if a building or a property were likely to contain asbestos without enlisting the aid of experts in verifying this process, it is easy to remember that buildings which were built before 1988 are more likely to contain asbestos in the form of flat or corrugated sheets. You can often see these sheets used for walls, ceilings, roofing, and sometimes even sprayed in pipes. Other products which contain asbestos include:

- asbestos-cement corrugated sheet
- roof coatings
- asbestos clothing
- clutch facings
- commercialized and industrialized asbestos friction merchandises
- roll board
- asbestos-cement flat sheet
- flooring felt
- non-roof coatings
- disc brake pads
- sheet and beater-add gaskets
- asbestos-cement pipe
- pipeline wrap
- asbestos-cement shingle
- roofing felt
- vinyl/asbestos floor tile
- drum brake linings
- commercial, corrugated and specialty paper
- automatic transmission parts
- brake blocks
- mill board

However, it is also best not to limit this time line before 1988 for there were still buildings and dwelling places which may contain asbestos containing products.

Checking for Asbestos

Identifying asbestos by sight is not going to work. In order to examine the presence of asbestos in an area, a broad awareness is required. We should view health risk elements every time when we verify this kind of matter. The safe and sound way to guarantee everyone’s safety is by looking for the assistance of asbestos adviser or occupational hygienist.

Due to the legal implications associated in dealing with possible asbestos containing properties, it is best to seek the aid from experts as they are licensed to carry out the task with less health implications. Once a property shows positive signs of asbestos contamination, the first step to consider is to determine if the asbestos containing materials are still intact and its fibers not airborne. This is important to identify if asbestos needs to be scraped off from the entire property or they need to secure it and just have it sealed or encapsulated. Sometimes there are instances where the removal of asbestos bearing materials isn’t necessary; but it’s better to eliminate any asbestos carrying materials on whatever property for safety measurements.

Informing Proper Channels

As soon as the test shows positive asbestos contamination, contacting a licensed asbestos contractor to assess the area is needed to ensure the safe removal of asbestos in every property. Normally, these contractors will measure the extent of the contamination and will provide you an estimate amount of the costs of removing the materials.

If you do not want to tackle it that way, maybe a floating floor ( Laminate) installed over it is your answer. Lots of choices and good selection is several price ranges.

Asbestos exposure/risk?

Hi guys,

Several years ago, as a child, I went on the garage roof a couple of times to get the ball down, obviously at the time, I had never heard of asbestos, and needless to say, that when I found out about asbestos and that the roof was made out of asbestos cement, I never went up there again.

Now I know asbestos cement is non-friable, and won’t release fibres unless it’s disturbed in some way i.e sawing, drilling etc. But my question is, do you think I may have caused enough disturbance to it by walking on it?, I may have went up there 2 or 3 times at most to get the ball down.

What is my possible risk of exposure, low/high?, I am now worried that I needlessly put myself at risk in childhood, where I could’ve prevented it if only I knew earlier.

Thanks for reading.

I would recommend not trying to install vinyl siding over asbestos siding. Asbestos siding is hard and brittle, so it is extremely hard to nail through.

Things You Can Do to Prevent Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium or the sac like protective covering of internal organs. The main cause is exposure to asbestos. Therefore the best possible prevention is to avoid exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma takes about thirty to fifty years for making itself prominent. People above the age of sixty five have shown an increased tendency to develop asbestos cancer. The mesothelioma is more common in men than women.

Asbestos is a mineral that is very commonly used. Due to increased health risks the use of asbestos has been reduced according to government regulations. In spite of all the regulations asbestos is being used in many manufacturing industries where it is mandatory for production. The most effective prevention method is to limit the exposure.

Working in a company which uses asbestos is not safe. Looking for alternate employment would be the safest option. The companies have asbestos related safety precautions and one can ensure they are being followed. The commonly seen jobs that pose the highest risk of mesothelioma are:

1-Insulation manufacturing and installations.

2-Mining

3-Railroad workers

4-Workers in the factories

5-Asbestos manufacturing companies

6-Ship yard workers

7-Automotive repairs

8-Manufacturers of gas masks

Many old homes contain traces of asbestos. If you suspect your home to contain materials made of asbestos they can be tested in the laboratory. There are agencies dealing with asbestos removal and they can be contacted for removing asbestos from your home. Though it can be done by yourself it is safer to let an asbestos abatement or removal contractor perform the procedure.

Asbestos that is not disturbed is not considered a health hazard. But if there is flaking, friable ceilings and plumbing and if the building is built before the 1980s then there are chances that they contain asbestos and have to be removed safely. Public buildings like schools, office buildings, libraries, theatres etc are all prone to this hazard. The problem should be brought to the city authorities’ notice. Living near someone who works near asbestos also exposes you to the mineral.

Asbestos can be transported through clothing, skin and hair. Even a few strands of asbestos can sometimes lead to mesothelioma.

Once you have been exposed to asbestos and have not yet been diagnosed with the fatal condition, there is still hope for you. If care is taken you might not even develop it. Blood tests can be done annually to confirm that you are well. There are other diagnostic tools that can be performed annually on asbestos exposed individuals to reconfirm their health status. These tests also aid in early detection when the condition is curable and can be controlled.

Smoking should be stopped since smokers are more susceptible to the onset of the condition if they have asbestos exposure history. Prevention is the best way out in mesothelioma since it is fatal if not diagnosed early.

Learn the Right Way for Installing Ceramic Tile Floors in a Cinch

Installing ceramic tile floors is not as hard as it looks. With a little knowledge and an easy step-by-step guide on how to do it, you can already be tiling your way to your dream floor. Here are some basic ceramic tiling tips you can chew on when you plan on installing ceramic tile floors at your home.

Knowing the kind of subfloor you’ll be installing ceramic tile flooring over is important. There are three main types of subfloors you might encounter: Vinyl, plywood, and concrete floors. Installing ceramic tile flooring directly to your vinyl or linoleum subfloor surfaces is greatly discouraged. One, it may contain asbestos fibers; and two, vinyl flooring is not a solid as good ol’ concrete flooring. When installing ceramic tile on vinyl, experts would recommend rough-sanding, or scarifying, the vinyl floor surface first so your tiling mortar has good grip to set on.

For plywood subfloors, be sure that the wood is at least 1 and 1/8 inches thick and is supported by an equally strong underlayment. Otherwise, your ceramic tiles will dislodge easily, or worse, break and need replacing. Concrete floors are the most ideal subfloor surface to work with. But before you can start installing ceramic tile flooring over it, it must be cleaned thoroughly. For dust and other debris, sweep and then mop your concrete subfloor surface, and allow it to dry completely. Smooth concrete surfaces must be rough sanded just like vinyl floors to allow the tiling mortar some grip.

You can begin window-shopping and canvassing for ceramic tiles once you have the space or area estimated. Ceramic floor tiles come in a variety of prices, shapes, textures and styles. Pick a tile type that’s within your price range and ask to see it in what a palette of colors. The most common ceramic tile size is one square foot. But ceramic tiles may come in a wide array of sizes; from one inch, to two feet.

Prices can vary according to tile type. Natural stone tiles made from granite or slate may sell for two dollars per square foot. Glazed ceramic tiles run from a dollar to twenty dollars per square foot, while unglazed quarry tiles may average around $2 per square foot.

An important thing to remember is to use ceramic tiles with a slightly rough textured surface when tiling the bathroom. This is so you won’t encounter accidents on a floor that’s always wet. Smooth glazed ceramic tiles, especially, are ideal for kitchen or back porch flooring. But you shouldn’t use them bathroom floors, as they can be treacherous when wet.

It’s also important to get the right equipment and tools for the project. You can buy most of the tools and materials you’ll need at you neighborhood hardware store, or home center. For equipment that might over your budget like tile cutters, try asking your local home center or tool rental yard if they have the tools you need for rental. Basic ceramic tiling tools include A pair of safety glasses, heavy leather gloves, tile spacers, notched trowel, a handheld tile cutter, and a pair of tile nippers. Have some sandpaper handy for smoothing out cut edges. Sponges and clean dry rags will come in handy for cleaning and wiping off excess mortar material and grout lining from your newly-finished ceramic tiling floor.

Of course, you can always consult a professional if you are hesitant over how to start installing ceramic tile on your floor. From choosing the right tiles and color, to tearing out existing ceramic tile floors without damaging the subfloor, to installing ceramic tile that will last you a lifetime, a home improvement professional will be able to help you with information, at the very least, or assist you when you start installing ceramic tile.

Asbestos Disposal: Make It A Safe Procedure

Asbestos disposal refers to the process of getting rid of asbestos or other asbestos containing items in a safe way. Asbestos is natural fibrous mineral. Many corporations used it for building and insulation materials. Asbestos was also used widely in fireproofing, pipe covering, cement, refractory materials, gaskets, floor tiles and joint compounds between 1890 and 1970. Exposure to asbestos particles is the reason behind many diseases including life-threatening cancer called mesothelioma. Looking at the harmful effects of asbestos exposure, no one can underestimate the importance of safe removal and disposal of asbestos.

It is better to dispose off some asbestos containing appliances such as oven rather than trying to separate the asbestos from it for disposal because separation of asbestos may prove to be very expensive and it can be hazardous. In some cases instead of complete removal of asbestos, we can seal the exposed insulation. Sealing minimizes the further risk of formation of airborne particles. Experts believe that Inhalation of asbestos fibers is much more likely when the asbestos is fragmented and airborne. Therefore, only a specialist should handle the process of asbestos disposal.

If you are planning the asbestos disposal process, then you should read the detailed instructions called Asbestos Removal Procedures for Home Owners of Utah State Department of Environmental Quality. Following are some recommendations to make asbestos disposal safe.

1. You must wet the friable asbestos containing material and place it in properly labeled leak-tight containers before shipping.

2. Only certified asbestos personnel must handle the regulated asbestos containing material.

3. You should not carry on the process of asbestos disposal during the periods of high wind.

4. Entry of unauthorized personnel must be strictly prohibited during the asbestos disposal process.

5. Friable asbestos and Category II non- friable asbestos-containing material should be covered by the end of each operating day with at least six inches of non- asbestos containing material such as soil. Category 1 non- friable asbestos containing material may be spread prior to being covered, but shall be covered by the end of each operating day with at least six inches of compacted non-asbestos containing material such as soil

6. You must maintain the records and file them to notify future landowners or interested parties, the locations and quantities of the asbestos waste buried at the site. A notice on the deed to the property must state that the site is subject to regulation and should include precautions against any attempt to disturb that area.

There are two ways to handle the situation, the “right” way or the cheapest way. What is actually required is for you to remove the tiles and dispose of them in a legal way. If you do choose to cover up the tiles with new tile, you will probably not have a problem, but if the home inspector finds you have the tiles underneath, you will have to disclose this to the buyer who may want money back from the sale to “remove the tiles” which they will never do since they are already covered. If you are going to remove the tiles, get a reputable asbestos abatement contractor who is going to do the job right and not put your health in jeopardy. This will cost you but then you will not have anything to worry about once it is gone.

What is the best way to clean the old asbestos house tiles?

the house im in has old asbestos tiles that are painted white apparently and there is mold and dirt from my dogs all on them in different areas.how should i clean this safely?????

Asbestos becomes dangerous when it is “frangible,” another word for crumbly and dusty. The particles then become airborne and can lodge in lungs, where they cause damage.

If your shingles are painted and in good shape, I would think you could scrub then GENTLY with soap and water. Don’t get rough with them and don’t use stiff brushes that could wear through the paint and start grinding at the asbestos shingle itself. You wouldn’t be in immediate danger because moisture would keep the asbestos from flying around, but the last thing you want to do is damage the shingles and shake lose particles of asbestos.

If your shingles are not in good shape, if they are cracked, breaking and crumbling, I would skip the whole idea of cleaning them and start thinking about removal and replacement. You can remove them safely yourself, but you’ll need to look into proper disposal options in your area. Here’s a good description of removal:

http://www.co.ba.md.us/Agencies/environment/asbestos_removal.html

This is exactly what I did with a very large old house I owned that was shingled with asbestos. The only thing I did differently was wear an industrial quality respirator with filters approved by NIOSH for protection against asbetos.

Be careful about your cleaning. If in doubt, play it safe. Good luck.
