The most frequently reported initial symptoms are abdominal pain (35%), abdominal swelling (31%), anorexia, marked weight loss, and ascites ; less frequently night sweats and hypercoagulability. Clinical presentation with fever of unknown origin, intestinal obstruction, or surgical emergency (due to acute inflammatory lesions) have been reported. Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.

Mesothelioma is defined as an ICD-O histology code of 9050-9053. Data are presented for a five-year time period. Mesothelioma cell viability was decreased in a dose-dependent manner by lovastatin (5 to 30 microM).

These effects were not reversed by exogenous growth factors or cholesterol, but were reversed by addition of doses of micro mevalonate, confirming that lovastatin affected mesothelioma viability by inhibiting mevalonate synthesis.
This is based on the fact that Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin lining surrounding the lung. That’s whythis disease is almost always fatal, often within a few months of diagnosis.

The scary part about this ilness: is that mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer (40 years versus 15-20 years). Understanding this, mesothelioma is therefore likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age.

Exposure to asbestos has also been associated with an increased incidence of esophageal, kidney, laryngeal, pharyngeal, and buccal cavity cancers.

As with other known chronic occupational diseases, disease associated with asbestos generally appears about twenty years following the first occurrence of exposure: There are no known acute effects associated with exposure to asbestos.

Exposure to ozone for several hours, at relatively low concentrations, has been found to significantly reduce lung function. Also this sort of exposure induce respiratory inflammation in normal, healthy people during exercise. This decrease in lung function generally is accompanied by symptoms including chest pain, coughing, sneezing, and pulmonary congestion.

Also it is vital to remind readers, that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a significant cause of lung cancers in people who themselves do not use tobacco. Let’s don’t forget that between 3000 and 6000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States are caused by exposure to ETS.

Should there be criminal liability for falsifying scientific reports?

Large corporations have frequently claimed the safety of products such as:

Note that there have been virtually no criminal complaints to date despite many documented cases. Is asbestos ductwork concealed within walls a major concern? It is not visible so I dont know if its friable.?

Had home inspection and its seems around all the metal HVAC ductwork inside the walls seems to be asbestos insulation… ; ( On the ductwrk that’s visible, there is no insulation. Is this a health concern since it is within the walls or should I ask the seller to have this removed? Nothing on the internet really addresses this particular situation (asbestos insulation on metal ductwork within walls) so I figured I ask you guys.

asbestos is a known carcinogen, but I doubt there is anything to be concerned with. As long as you don’t disturb the insulation Alto you’re fine.

I removed floor tile, with a pick, that I found out was asbestos. I inhaled the dust for 2 days. Am I at risk?

I’m not sure how much exposure to asbestos is bad for you. I was breathing the dust in for AT LEAST 2 days. That’s the only form of asbestos I was ever exposed to, as far as I know. Am I now at risk for asbestos-related illness? I’m very nervous about this.

Angel (above) has given you a full answer, and I wouldn’t disagree with what she says, however, it depends. Assuming the floor tiles were lino tiles, then the only type of asbestos used for floor tiles was Chrysotile (white asbestos). Of the 6 types of asbestos in the world, Chrysotile is the least harmful. This does not mean that it is harmless, but it is less likely to have a long term damaging effect.

I should also mention that the black bituminous material that was probably used to stick the floor tiles down, was also likely to have contained asbestos.

Please bear in mind that asbestos is at it’s most harmful when it is inhaled. As you can imagine, it is very difficult to make bituminous material or vinyl become airborne.

The odds are very much in your favour that you will escape any long term effect on this occasion, but I am sure you will remember this for future work. Beware of textured coatings too, they can also commonly contain asbestos.

During Escrow, the inspector revealed possible asbestos fiber in attic, can I ask seller(bank) to fix it?

I’m in the process of purchasing a house. Last week, my house inspector found that there is a broken transite pipe in the attic. He suspected that there might be asbestos filber explosure.

I contacted some asbestos specialists and they took some air samples yesterday. As per discussed with them, should there be any asbestos explosures in the house, the costs of asbestos removal and clean-up will likely be up to $1500.

Nevertheless, the tricky part is, in the seller addendum, the bank states that the house is a bank-owned property and it will be sold “AS IS”. Which means the bank will neither decrease the selling price nor give buyer credit for any kind of Repairs.

My question here is: The asbestos is not a “Repair” issue, it’s more of a “Health Hazard” issue. Will the seller(bank) be responsible for $1500 Asbestos removal expenses?
Or, do I , as a buyer, have to suck it up and pay that expense?

You should request the bank remove the asbestos. I hope you are working with a realtor who can direct you appropriately.

How can I get housed quicker?

I’m due to give birth on the 30th January. Me and my partner have been on the housing list for months but are getting no where. We currently live in a small 3 bedroom housing association house with my 3 brothers and my dad, we have a dog and a cat aswell. I am also a bit concerned by the fact that we have asbestos and when our bathroom is re-done they aren’t going to remove it. My younger brothers are about to do their A-Levels and the last thing they need is a crying baby depriving them of sleep. My older brother has aspergus syndrome and can’t deal with babies very well. My room is too small to fit a cot in let alone everything else a baby needs. Me and my partner both work but we are in that small percentage of people who don’t quite earn enough to be able to rent privately. To top it off we have a wedding to pay for in May and I don’t think I can handle my dad’s mood swings and smoking in the house any more.

Mesothelioma – The Asbestos Ban That Wasn’t

The litigation surrounding asbestos and Mesothelioma has been legendary. It represented the little guy against huge corporate entities. The entities prevailed for a very long time, but ultimately the fact asbestos exposure was causing Mesothelioma and lung cancer could not be avoided. Eventually, the government moved to ban asbestos in products and then the controversy started.

The great asbestos wars of the 1960s, 70s and 80s were iconic. The issue of whether asbestos in products caused health problems was highly disputed. The manufacturers claimed that it didn’t. Workers claimed that not only did it, but the manufacturers had known it did and still released it in products. This created a war of lawyers unlike any seen in a long time.

Eventually, it became clear that the manufacturers of asbestos were in the wrong. As is often the case, the government took its sweet time doing anything but finally did. The response finally occurred on July 12, 1989 when the EPA issued a final ruling effectively banning asbestos in the vast majority of products whether they be building materials, brake pads, insulation or whatever. The story, however, was not at an end.

The manufacturers struck back. They appealed the order and to some effect. In 1991, the Fifth Circuit Appellate Court struck down part of the EPA order. It was a lengthy and complex decision, but essentially found certain areas should not be regulated. This ultimately resulted in the “sort-of” asbestos ban that we have today.

So, where do things stand with asbestos? Generally, asbestos cannot be used in any new products that traditionally have not used it before. Also, it is banned from use in roll board, flooring felt, and commercial, corrugated, or specialty paper. Other than that, there is no ban. If this doesn’t surprise you, it should.

There is a common belief that Mesothelioma cases will start to fade away in the next ten to twenty years as asbestos ban of 1989 starts to take real effect given the 40 year gestation period for Mesothelioma. This assumption is simply wrong. How so? We know that asbestos is still being used widely despite the EPA ban. Where asbestos and humans mix, Mesothelioma is sure to follow.

Does anyone know of a person who suffers from the Asbestos illness the rare Lung Disease?

Asbestos we all know can cause Lung Cancer as you get older but has anyone been diagnosed at an earlier age like 45 or younger. Has anyone heard about Asbestos in Ironing Board Covers? I read an article stating that Ironing Board Covers has a trace of Asbestos in the materials used. Should we be alarmed? Should we throw away all ironing boards and if so, how will we iron our clothes besides using a steam iron? Please help with this difficult solution. Asbestos does indeed cause a rare form of lung disease called mesothelioma. It is because of the nature of the extremely small fibers that make up asbestos. Once the loose fibers are inhaled the stay in the lungs for years as a constant irritant to the lungs, and eventually cancer results. In the past asbestos was used in everything from brake shoes, to window putty, to pipe insulation and more. It was used because of its ability to withstand high temps. The real problem is when the fibers are loose like when the wheels of a car are removed and the dust is inhaled, or when the insulation of an old building is flaking and the fibers are loose and can be inhaled, this is the real danger. As long as the asbestos is intact and the fibers are not loose there is no danger. Asbestos is no longer used in cars, or insulation or ceiling tiles or any other products because it is so dangerous. If these are newer ironing board covers there is no asbestos in there. About 5 years ago here in MN there was a congressman who died of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. He worked in old buildings in the east side of Saint Paul, MN and was exposed to asbestos insulation. Once a person has it there is no cure, but based on what you wrote I would not worry about any modern products as asbestos was outlawed a long time ago.
