The Pentadactylos Mountains began to emerge eleven million years ago at the end of the Miocene era, but the Mesaoria appeared much later, during the Pleistocene Age, a million years ago. Today, the Troodos massif, a bulky range with the 1951m Mount Olympus at its peak, dominates the south of the island. It consists of igneous rock and pillow lavas originally formed from molten rock beneath the 8,000- metre deep ocean that ocean separated the continents of Eurasia and Afro-Arabia. Its serpentine rocks contain rich deposits of copper, asbestos, chromites and iron pyrites. Troodos provides a unique opportunity for anyone interested in geology, because it is one of the rare places in the world where you can actually stand on the earth’s mantle. The Pentadactylos range, which runs parallel to the northern coastline, is the east Mediterranean’s southernmost range of the great Alpine-Himalaya chain. It consists of thrust masses of limestone of the Permian, Carboniferous and Cretaceous periods, with marl, sandstone and conglomerates from the Miocene era on the lower slopes. The Mesaoria, between the two mountain ranges, stretches from Morfou in the west to Famagusta in the east, with the capital, Nicosia, lying more or less in the middle. This central plain is mainly marl and shell-limestone, while in the eastern foothills of the Troodos range, chalk, limestone and gypsum are common.

The rock formations have played a significant role in the development of the landscape. The erosion resistant dunites, serpentines, gabbros and diabases of the Troodos massif are the main reason for its height and its harsh, rugged scenery, while less erosion-resistant chalk at lower altitudes have formed the rounded white landscape of the vineyards. The limestone cliffs of the Akamas have created karsts, with subterranean streams, reservoirs and caves containing stalagmites and stalactites. There are also deep gorges at the west of the island. The rivers flowing radially from the Troodos have opened steep-sided river valleys and there are significant waterfalls at Kalidonia, Mesapotamos and Fini. The Salt Lakes at Akrotiri and Larnaka lose their water is summer sue to evaporation and, until quite recently, the salt harvested from the dried-out lake at Larnaka was sold on the local market. The natural vegetation of Cyprus is broadly split into four categories: forests, maquis, Mediterranean garrigue and herbaceous plants. The main forests trees at high altitude are pines, including the flat-topper Troodos pine. Cedar, plane, alder, maple and the endemic golden oak grow on the lower slopes and, near the coasts, juniper predominates. The golden oak has beeen declared the national tree of Cyprus. Maquis vegetation, which thrives on poor quality siliceous soil, includes rockroses, arbutus, myrtle and rosemary. The scrub vegetation of the garrigue is chiefly on limestone soil and includes the spiny burnet, capers and aromatics such as thyme, rosemary, oregano and lavender. Cyprus is characterized by an extremely high number of indigenous plant species, approximately 2000, of which almost 140 are emdemic, such as the Cyclamen cyprium, which has been declared the national flower of Cyprus. For nature lovers, early spring is the most rewarding period of the year. There is a riotous blossoming of poppies, anemones, cyclamen, iris, gladioli, tulips and crown daisies. Approximately fifty species, subspecies and varieties of orchid are found, including several endemics. Birds on the spring and autumn north –south migration use Cyprus as a stopping point and the two Salt Lakes (Larnaka and Akrotiri) offer a winter home to large flocks of greater flamingos. Nightingales, golden orioles, hoopoes, rollers and bee-eaters are among the visitors and residents include several endemic species, such as the Cyprus warble and the Cyprus Wheatear. The population of te Griffon Vulture has declined rapidly over recent years and the birds no longer visit many of their traditional nesting sites. At one time, these beautiful shy animals were hunted almost to extinction. However, a captive-breeding programme has saved the species and today around 10,000 live in and around the Pafos Forest. They are best seen in a reserve at the Stavros tis Psokas Forest Station., in the Troodos range. Cyprus is one of the few remaining nesting grounds for the endangered Green Turtle and the Loggerhead Turtle. Turtles lay their eggs in the sand on isolated beaches. Gradual human encroachment into their territory and depredation of the nests and hatchling by foxes and other predators has severely jeopardised the survival of these primeval marine creatures.Northern Cyprus Holidays In 1978, the Cyprus Fisheries Department established a turtle hatchery at Lara Beach, one of the main nesting sites on the west coast. Turtle eggs are also transported from other beaches to hatch in safe conditions at Lara. Although not a wild animal in danger of extinction, the Cyprus donkey has always been an important feature of rural life. It was a form of transport, beast of burden and the means for drawing water from the wells. The Nubian Donkey is believed to be the domestic donkey’s ancestor and it is known that donkeys were domesticated before horses. What is not known is when the first donkeys arrived in Cyprus but the remains of an ass have been found in a tomb from the seventh century BC. Villagers from the remoter areas can still be seen riding and working with donkeys, and there is a Donkey Sanctuary at the village of Vouni, northwest of Lemesos (Limassol)

I am frantic about possibly inhaling asbestos?

I am having remodling done in my home. The floor tile that was removed contained asbestos glue. The contactor left and did not clean up properly so I cleaned up …holy hell whats gonna happen to me. How much exposure did i need to have, etc.

Just the thought of mesothelioma is scary and I can’t fault you for feeling panicky.
Chances are that you will be okay but you should mention your concern to your doctor and familiarize yourself with the symptoms. There is a lot of information available online. Nobody knows for sure how much exposure will cause the cancer, if you were in close contact with the asbestos, breathing the particles, you would be at risk.

Warning to Building Trade: Don’t be Affected by Hidden Killer

 

In May, a building surveyor who did not carry out an asbestos survey during a refurbishment in Birmingham was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,016 at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

HSE inspector Karl Raw said, “As a building surveyor with many years experience, the man is this case should have been aware of his duty to manage the asbestos risk. This is a reminder that even with simple refurbishments, there are legal requirements to protect workers and others from the threat of asbestos.”

Any asbestos materials on site should be safely identified before any work, such as repairs, refurbishment or demolition is carried out. This should be done by a company qualified to do so. Roy Tindall Managing Director of Reddish Vale Asbestos Removals explains, “If we identify asbestos and people are likely to come into contact with it, we put a plan and the right procedures in place to protect them. Anyone who doesn’t do this is in breach of the HSE regulations and breaking the law.”

Help with Exterior Painting?

I’m planning on painting the exterior of my house this spring and I need some tips. Its a 2 story, approx. 2,000 sq. foot home. I have wooden (asbestos) shingles. The paint that is on there now is almost 10 years old and is pretty chalky to the touch. Obviously I’ll have to prime it. Should I spray the house or not? My neighbor used an electric sponge that pumps paint from the bucket. It looks pretty good but I dont think this is the most efficient way. I live in southeast PA so the weather will be around 75-80 and a little humid. Any help/tips would be appreciated.

Mr. Villa here is asking relevant questions about painting his house, and we have people talking about vinyl siding, intact & painted tiles being hazardous due to carcinogens and other non relevant mutterings. Bob, here’s the straight scoop on how to do this job:

(1) pressure wash the house and if there’s even the slightest hint of fungus use a gallon or two of pool chlorine (NOT BLEACH) with the siphon tube attachment that comes with most pressure washers. You’ll need a 2500 PSI unit for this job along with (2) 50′ hoses. There’s also a rotating ceramic tip at most rental yards that spins the water in cone that increases the stripping and cleaning ability and makes the job quicker.

***Being that your house has paint on it and your not cutting, grinding or sanding on the asbestos tiles we don’t have to worry about you or the neighbors getting cancer***

Once the house is washed let it dry out for 24 hours and then apply what’s called “Seal-Krete” http://www.seal-krete.com/cleaners_prep.htm which comes in 5 gallon containers like paint. Spray this on the house to lock down the chalking and then paint your house with premium quality paint. I would use an airless sprayer to paint this house being the height and the fact that it’s shingled.

Now, if your with me this far, take my advice on the paint and use Valspar which you can get at Lowes; this paint is what I consider the best on the market as far as color, ease of use, coverage and durability. If you’re a Home Depot shopper get the Glidden “Evermore” line of paint. I refrain from using Behr Paints, not because it’s a poor quality product as it’s an excellent coating for color and durability, it’s that it’s always proved to be very labor intensive due to coverage. It’s a 3-5 coat coating to get that color, depth and appearance perfect, whereas the above I’ve referenced are a two coat to achieve the same result.

Anyone know Wa state renters rights regarding asbestos?

We have popcorn ceilings in our house and it has been brought to our attention that because our house is old, it’s likely that it contains asbestos. I’ve looked online and can’t find exactly what I’m looking for. I contacted my landlord and he told me there is no need to have my house tested because it takes years to affect your health. I have two children under the age of three and do not want to bet their health on the word of some know it all yuppie. I am aware that it does take years to affect your health and the asbestos must be disturbed to release the particles into the air, but my children are my whole world and if there is even a remote chance of them being harmed I am not willing to take it.
Please help me out if you have any helpful info regarding the actual question. (Opinions are not helpful, so please only respond if you really know.) Thanks.

I have been having sinus and allergy like symptoms ongoing for weeks. I live in a very old house ………….

without central heat or air. The air is run from two window units and the heat from one window unit in bedroom, and an old gas heater in the front part of the house. My house also has asbestos shingling on the outside. Also my dog is having allergy like symptoms too. Could any of these things with my house be the cause for our illness?
I go through sinus and allergy stuff at this time every year, but things have been worse since I moved into this house and it’s ongoing; it doesn’t let up. Usually I have sinus stuff for a day or two and then I feel better. This has lasted almost four weeks and now I am having symptoms like the flu.

Has anyone ever had asbestos siding removed?

I know that it is a job for the pros, but I am just trying to figure out a ballpark price for a prospected remodeling job. The home is just over 1000 sq ft. What did you pay and how long did it take? Did the people who removed it also put up your new siding?

My contractor put it right over the asbestos siding. I think it’s ok plus it saves you money.
I think the alarm for asbestos is sorta overrated. Breathing in the dust over a long period of time in a confined area can be hazardous ….. but that is so with many elements. Asbestos siding is normally painted over a few times and sealed .

Oh well ….. I say if your contractor can go right over it … let him do so. Its a great fire barrier and like layers of clothing ….. helps to insulate from the outside elements.
