Many people are surprised to learn, especially in the context of our modern understanding of its toxicity and harmful properties, that asbestos is a naturally occurring and extremely useful mineral and not a man made material. But what is even more astonishing is that the toxicity and potentially harmful nature of asbestos was realised thousands of years ago!

Asbestos has been mined out of the ground and used for over 3000 years! As in more recent times, the ancient civilisations that first used it put it to many uses. Because of these latter properties the word asbestos itself derives from the Greek term for inextinguishable and the Greeks also referred to it as the miracle or magical mineral in recognition of these properties.

The use of asbestos is thought of, by many, as a modern practice but clearly not. However, surely the manifestation of serious health issues arising out of the use of asbestos is a modern phenomenon? Again, the answer to this must regrettably be put in the negative. This is because whilst the ancients realised the huge benefits of asbestos, they also realised that the workers (mostly slaves) who mined for the asbestos mineral from the ground and manufactured items incorporating asbestos were developing lung illnesses. A Roman observer of the time even called for the protection of workers from the inhalation of asbestos fibers by provision and use of a form of early dust mask.

There was a decline in the use of asbestos in the middle ages. During the Industrial Revolution there was an enormous increase in the use of asbestos, more than at any time before. It was now put to an even greater range of uses including insulation in particular for pipes and boilers, steam locomotives, brake and clutch linings, fire doors etc., the uses were almost endless due to its ‘magical’ properties. Millions and millions of tonnes of asbestos were used in these and many other ways over many years until a decline in its use in the 1970s following increasing pressure not to use it due to the, by then, more widely known health risks.

However, by this time millions of workers had been exposed to the harmful fibers. In addition to the miners and workers employed directly in the asbestos industry, their family and residents who lived close to the factories were also exposed. It is shocking to realise that often the workers would return home after work covered in asbestos dust looking like ’snowmen’ and exposing their, often very young, families to it. This has resulted in family members developing the same kinds of often very serious asbestos diseases as the workers themselves developed.

Like the ancients before them, the Victorians began to realise, or at least rediscover, the very dangerous nature of asbestos fibers and the risk to health from asbestos disease. In 1898 The Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Factories and Workshops to the Government reported ‘Of all the dusty occupations which specifically came under observation in 1898 three … stand out on account of their easily demonstrated danger to the health of workers, and because of ascertained cases of injuries to bronchial tubes and lungs medically attributed to the employment of the sufferers. The evil effects of asbestos dust have also attracted my attention, a microscopic examination of this mineral dust which was made by HM Medical Inspector clearly revealed the sharp glass-like jagged nature of the particles and where they are allowed to rise and to remain suspended in the air of a room, in any quantity, the effects have been found to be injurious as might have been expected …. The worker may continue for a very long time before the symptoms of the evil become marked.’ There were many more reports, research papers and changes in legislation to follow aimed at highlighting the risks of asbestos disease to the Government(s) and employers yet despite this growing body of evidence it took nearly another century for an outright ban on the use of asbestos to be implemented! In the meantime millions of workers were being exposed, sowing the seeds of a health crisis now being felt by thousands of these workers who have developed asbestos diseases as a result. These diseases include malignant mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural thickening and pleural plaques.

Regrettably, during the very same period the use of asbestos actually increased until the 1970s and despite the changes in legislation designed to protect workers in reality very little action was taken to do so by employers despite all the evidence of the risks of asbestos disease. What is even more regrettable is that the historical record shows that employers continued to expose their workers to asbestos will full knowledge of the risks of asbestos disease and conspired to conceal this information from the workers themselves who, in the vast majority of cases, were not aware of the risks or fully aware of the risks and how they could protect themselves from those risks! Simple steps could have been taken by employers to want the workers and to give them some protection in the form of face masks, breathing apparatus etc.

Unfortunately the historical record shows that big business and the pursuit of big profits got in the way of proper warnings and protection being given to the workers. In pursuit of the prize of these big profits the asbestos companies concealed the inconvenient truth that asbestos is a potential killer from the most vulnerable and at risk. This is a hard fact suffers of asbestos disease have to swallow when they learn about this cover up. It is worth remembering that there is no cure for the asbestos disease known as mesothelioma and sufferers may only have 9 to 12 months to live following diagnosis. Will short-term exposure to asbestos have any effects on me?

i recently became aware of floor tiles in my home that contain asbestos.
the tiles were located underneath some carpet that was recently pulled up b/c of a water flood on the floor. the tiles are sporadically broken into pieces. we don’t know how they broke or how long they have been broken.
water extraction took place on thursday & heaters were placed in the home. on friday (after level of asbestos was determined), fans were placed in the home to facilitate the drying process. the central heat & air conditioning was left on throughout the weekend.
floor was determined to be 100% dry on monday, & the fans were removed that day.
i experienced headaches & on tuesday, i vomitted.
i understand that my reactions (symptoms) may have been merely from dirt & dander circulating b/c the carpet was removed. just want to know if asbestos is now being removed, was asbestos exposure minimal, & is it possible the ANYTHING bad can/will result from the things i mentioned above?

Asbestos Exposure Cancer and Lymphoid Structures

Inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to a deadly form of cancer called mesothelioma.  Some theories posit that asbestos can actually travel through the blood stream and enter organs like the kidney, or even the brain.  One interesting study is called, “Asbestos Exposure and Gastrointestinal Malignancy Review and Meta-Analysis” by Howard Frumkin, MD, Jesse Berlin – American Journal of Industrial Medicine – Volume 14 Issue 1, Pages 79 – 95 Jan 2007.  Here is an excerpt:  “Abstract – The epidemiologic literature linking asbestos exposure with gastrointestinal malignancy is reviewed. Problems in comparing studies are discussed, appropriate strategies for comparison are developed, and study results are pooled using a model which accounts for both intrastudy and interstudy variability. Stratification of cohorts by dose reveals that significant asbestos exposure, as indicated by a lung cancer standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of at least 200, is associated with an elevated gastrointestinal cancer SMR for five or six end points examined.”

Another interesting study is called, “Migration of Asbestos Fibres from Subcutaneous Injection Sites in Mice” by K. Kanazawa, M. S. C. Birbeck, R. L. Carter, and F. J. C. Roe – Br J Cancer. 1970 March; 24(1): 96–106.   Here is an excerpt: “Crocidolite asbestos fibres, suspended in physiological saline, were injected subcutaneously into one or both flanks of 95 CBA/Lac female mice; 75 control mice received injections of saline only. Most animals were killed at chosen intervals of between 2 and 42 days after injection but some were left for longer periods of up to 623 days. At autopsy, many lymphoid and non-lymphoid structures were removed and examined for the presence of asbestos by the following techniques: haematoxylin and eosin staining followed by conventional and polarized light microscopy; Perl’s stain; microincineration followed by phase-contrast microscopy; maceration with KOH followed by phase-contrast microscopy; and electron microscopy.A combination of haematoxylin and eosin staining and microincineration was found to be the most convenient and reliable method for demonstrating asbestos fibres in the tissues. Electron microscopy was essential for detecting very small fibres and for locating them to specific intracellular structures.  The morphological findings indicate that some migration of asbestos fibres away from the initial site of injection takes place. Dissemination is usually along lymphatic pathways and fibres tend to accumulate in the lymphoid tissues, particularly in the regional (axillary) lymph nodes; smaller amounts were found in inguinal, mediastinal and lumbar nodes. The fibres were usually intracellular, lying inside the phagosomes of macrophages, but larger fibres were sometimes encountered lying free. Small numbers of fibres were seen in the spleen and also in non-lymphoid organs such as the liver, kidneys and brain—suggesting that some asbestos may enter the blood stream. There was no evidence of massive or selective spread to subserosal tissues in the thorax or abdomen, though trapping of asbestos fibres was observed in pleural “milky spots” in long-term survivors. Here is an excerpt: “To determine whether asbestos inhalation induces the formation of reactive nitrogen species, three groups of rats were exposed intermittently over 2 wk to either filtered room air (sham-exposed) or to chrysotile or crocidolite asbestos fibers. The rats were killed at 1 or 6 wk after exposure. At 1 wk, significantly greater numbers of alveolar and pleural macrophages from asbestos-exposed rats than from sham-exposed rats demonstrated inducible nitric oxide synthase protein immunoreactivity. Alveolar macrophages from asbestos-exposed rats also generated significantly greater nitrite formation than did macrophages from sham-exposed rats. Strong immunoreactivity for nitrotyrosine, a marker of peroxynitrite formation, was evident in lungs from chrysotile- and crocidolite-exposed rats at 1 and 6 wk. Staining was most evident at alveolar duct bifurcations and within bronchiolar epithelium, alveolar macrophages, and the visceral and parietal pleural mesothelium. Lungs from sham-exposed rats demonstrated minimal immunoreactivity for nitrotyrosine. Significantly greater quantities of nitrotyrosine were detected by ELISA in lung extracts from asbestos-exposed rats than from sham-exposed rats. These findings suggest that asbestos inhalation can induce inducible nitric oxide synthase activation and peroxynitrite formation in vivo, and provide evidence of a possible alternative mechanism of asbestos-induced injury to that thought to be induced by Fenton reactions.”

Question on Asbestos (short exposure?)?

Hi

This might sound like a silly question but anyway – I was at a place in school where I shouldn’t of been (bad, I know!) – it’s a small room filled with pipes and so on. I noticed that there boxes marked “CONTAINS ABESTOS” – overall, I spent about 30 minutes in the room about 5 times (so…6 hours over time). I don’t know if the asbestos was exposed and I did not touch or open the boxes. The only time I was near the boxes was when I noticed the warning sign.

At such a short exposure is it possible that I could have asbestos cancer in later life? I know it is of course possible but I’m sort of interested in a “very unlikely but still possible” reply (or if that isn’t the case…what you think!)

As long as you did not disturb the taping on the pipes and then sniff the asbestos underneath then you have zero danger. You might be surprised to know how many of the schools, commercial buildings and millions of homes built between 1935 and 1990 used lots of asbestos and asbestos containing components in their construction.

Most popcorn ceilings in homes and apartments built in the 50s and 60s contain a high level of asbestos. One house where I was working on the ceiling in was tested and the popcorn ceiling we were removing without masks tested as 25% asbestos. That was 20 years ago and according to my pulmonologist that I see for asthma my lungs show no asbestos damage. While asbestos is nasty stuff and to be avoided it is chronic exposure in confined spaces that is truly dangerous.

The people that develop mesothelioma, which is actually a fairly rare type of cancer, worked daily installing those asbestos pipes and sheeting in confined work areas like ships. My relative who worked on large barges told me about regularly using sheets of asbestos to stop his welding sparks from creating fires while he was working inside these large barges. He suffered no lung damage but he was very fortunate. Most of the people who were heavily exposured to asbestos during the WW2 era are already dead from one cause or another. Another way to get severe asbestos exposure was working daily with powdered vermiculite while doing commercial gardening since vermiculite is a type of asbestos and the dust can be quite deadly if inhaled on a regular basis.

Government rules say that asbestos in ceilings or pipes should not be disturbed in any way and only removed following specific regulations and while wearing the proper equipment. Asbestos is an example of something once considered a miracle substance that turned out to be much more dangerous and deadly than anyone every thought. As time goes by we will find many more such substances like the piles of radioative waste currently sitting around the country with no truly safe depository to help keep this stuff safe and contained.

There is more than one type of asbestos, and thus more than one chemical formula.

“Asbestos” usually refers to one of the following minerals: anthophyllite, tremolite, actinolite, crocidolite or chrysotile.

Chrysotile is the most common (and while still dangerous, one of the least toxic types) – its chemical formula is Mg3Si2O5(OH)4.

Another common type of asbestos is riebeckite – Na2(Fe,Mg)5Si8O22(OH)2.

Note that “asbestos” is only a habit (form of crystal growth) – some minerals can grow in both the fibrous masses that make up asbestos and in a more solid form.
