How Much Asbestos Exposure Causes Mesothelioma?

How do you tell if the if exterior shingles on your house are made of asbestos?

I need to determine whether or not the shingles on a house are made of a composite of asbestos and cement or whether they are made of wood. Is there an easy way to tell without hiring a professional? One person told me it was easy, another person told me it wasn’t. I’ve had two people say they are asbestos, and three people say they aren’t including the home owner who lived there for 40+ years. I am now a landlord and am renting out this home and I just received a notice from the insurance company saying that they are cancelling my insurance policy due to the asbestos. So, I’m trying to educate myself on the topic. What specifically do you look for, and how exactly do to you tell if the shingles are made of wood or asbestos. The shingles are currently painted.

Go to your local hardware or home improvement store and buy a testing kit. They are 100% accurate.

But first, to find out if they are wood or asbestos, scrape the paint off of one of the shingles in an inconspicuous spot. If they are wood, you will know because of the softness. If they are asbestos, it will be hard like concrete.

Also, when asbestos shingles are installed, they cannot countersink and hide the nails so the nail heads show. Of course this is true of other composite shingles so the only way to be sure is with the testing kit.

One word of advise! Keep a low profile on this possible problem.

Best stripper for 8″ floor tiles.?

I just purchased a home that is approximately 50 years old. It has the orginal tiles. I believe most of the visible grime is actually ground into the wax used to protect the floor from scratches and marring. It appears to be in good enough condition to clean up and then protect with area rugs, both to preserve the original design of the home, as well as avoid hazardous waste entering the landfill from asbestos. Any hints on how to restore?

I assume you mean vinyl tiles. You ll need to try and find out what was used. If it was a commercial type sealer, some can be “reactivated” when a buffer is run over them. If not you ll have to check w/ a janitorial supply place and get some stripper and reseal w/ a different sealer and buff on occasion. GL

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Although they may seem like a new innovation, air purifiers have been around for more than 200 years. Beginning as protective masks for fireman, air purifiers have now evolved the ability to protect you and your family from airborne pollutants.

As allergies and asthma now affect more than 50 million Americans, the concern for safe indoor air quality has rapidly increased. Now more than ever, Americans are looking for ways to improve their indoor air quality. Air purifiers lead the pack in advancements for cleaner air.

Allergens like smoke, mold spores, pollen, bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and other pollutants damage your lungs and immune system. Unfortunately, most of these irritants cannot be seen by the naked eye. Air purifiers filter allergens and pollutants seen or unseen by the human eye. To remove these objects, air purifiers typically use filters, electrical attraction, or ozone.

Air filters utilize fine sieves that filter particles from circulating air. As air flows into the air purifier, the finer the sieve used, the smaller the particles it traps. The accepted benchmark for air filters has been set by the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which are guaranteed to trap 99.97% of airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. Microns are the standard unit used for measuring air particles. Each micron is equivalent to 1/25,400 of an inch. The naked eye cannot see anything this small, so pollutants like bacteria and viruses escape detection. Room air conditioner filters only capture particles 10 microns or larger. HEPA filters remove smaller allergens like dust, smoke, chemicals, asbestos, pollen, and pet dander.

The more times the air passes through the HEPA filter, the cleaner the air becomes. The room capacity of a HEPA air purifier will determine whether the air cleaner can handle your air purifying needs. Top-of-the-line brands like Austin Air purifiers will provide approximately 15 air exchanges per hour in an average room and contain an average of 15 lbs of activated carbon/zeolite blends, which adsorb chemicals and odors.

In addition to the HEPA filter, brands like AllerAir and IQAir offer an optional medical grade ultra-violet (UV) light system, used to quickly kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi upon entry into the air purifier. UV light also protects the HEPA filter from biological and viral contamination.

Electrical attraction is another technology utilized by air purifiers to trap particles. Three types of air cleaners work using electrical attraction: electrostatic precipitating cleaners, electret filters, and negative ion generators.

Electrostatic precipitating cleaners, or electronic air purifiers, draw particles in by fan and charge them with a series of high-voltage wires. Several plates (precipitating cells) carry the opposite electrical charge and attract the contaminants as they pass by the plates. Electronic air purifiers are perfect for individuals who don’t want to worry about the costly replacements of HEPA filters. Friedrich electrostatic air purifiers remove approximately 95% of all airborne particles and carry low energy costs for you.

Electret filters in air purifiers use synthetic fibers that create static charges to attract particles. Electret filters are offered in a variety of types including plain, pleated, disposable or reusable. Depending on the type of filter you need, will determine how often the filter requires replacement.

Some brands like Blueair combine the HEPA technology with their own electrostatic media filter technology, which charges the incoming particles instead of the filter. By marrying the two unique purification systems together, Blueair created a more effective air cleaner.

Negative ion generators or ionic air purifiers use tiny, charged wires or needles to create gas molecules with negative charges or ions that adhere to the airborne particles and collect in the filter. However, many ions end up back in the air, sticking to furnishings and other surfaces that may be stained by them.

Ionic air purifiers only remove certain types of particles and aren’t always effective against gases, chemicals, or odors. Some ionic air purifiers have been shown to re-circulate the same dirty particles that they draw in, making them much less effective than traditional air purifiers using HEPA filtration.

Instead of using filters to trap particles, ozone generators use high voltage electrical currents to convert oxygen to ozone, which acts as a powerful oxidant and breaks down molecules and microorganisms in the air. Several tests have proved that ozone generators are not very effective at removing indoor allergens.

Ozone, in fact, can be hazardous to your health, and both ozone generators and ionic air cleaners emit ozone. In nature, lightning creates ozone when it cuts through oxygen molecules in the air. In the atmosphere, ozone helps protect us from harmful UV rays; however, on the ground level, ozone is a powerful lung irritant. When created artificially, ozone can actually aggravate allergies and asthma, damaging the lining of nasal passages and lungs, causing coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association advise against using ozone generators.

Asbestos and radon are growing problems in homes today. Heating devices produce carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases, and chemicals like formaldehyde and ammonia are increasing in the home environment. Since most Americans stay indoors an average of 90% of the time, providing fresher and cleaner air has never been more important.

Asbestos Mine Cleanup Programs

 

Asbestos is the term for a group of minerals which have rather amazing qualities. They are heat resistant, do not conduct electricity, block sound, and resist chemical change. As well, they are fibrous and very durable and strong.

For about a century until the 1970s or 1980s, asbestos was mined worldwide and used in many industries. Family homes, schools, and most buildings of any type had asbestos in insulation for electrical wires, in drywall, flooring, ceiling tiles, and plumbing. The people who worked in industries using asbestos, or who worked in asbestos mines, were exposed daily to the tiny asbestos fibers which easily become airborne. From the air, they get stuck in clothing, hair, shoes, food and drinks. So they were breathed in daily, and ingested in meals. Family members were exposed to the fibers brought home in clothing etc.

Most asbestos mines have been closed down. But wherever asbestos was extracted from the earth or processed in nearby plants, the fibers remain in dust, in the soil, blown by the wind, posing a hazard to local residents. All those sites need to be cleaned up and the asbestos safely disposed of. The Federal Government has been active in this, in particular the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA).

There are many abandoned asbestos mines across the U.S. and in other countries such as Britain, Australia and South Africa. In Britain and Australia, cleanup is underway. In South Africa, it has not begun at all and from many old mines, blue asbestos fibers (the most deadly type of fibers) blow every day on to nearby communities. Those mines were owned and run by various international companies, including one owned by Stephen Schmidheiny, a Swiss environmentalist who began the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Recent Clean-up Efforts

In this country, the U.S. Geological Survey has conducted a long project to identify and map asbestos mines and the occurrences of asbestos, whether or not they have been mined. The E.P.A. is now supervising a variety of Superfund cleanup projects nationwide, of which the following are some examples.

· The Coalinga Asbestos Mine, Coalinga, California

· The Vermont Asbestos Group mine on Belvedere Mt. In Vermont

· Chicago Milwaukee Corporation (CMC) Bozeman Asbestos Facility in Montana

W.R. Grace & Co. in Montana

In August, 2004, clean up began at a mine at Libby, Montana, which was blowing asbestos into a power substation in Salt Lake City, Utah. For forty years asbestos had been processed nearby at Libby. One of the large corporations involved is W.R. Grace & Co. This company had previously mined vermiculite (another useful mineral used in insulation) which occurred here mixed in with asbestos.

Grace has been the subject of over 70,000 lawsuits involving mesothelioma and asbestosis, and has been investigated by a U.S. Grand Jury for “crimes” committed at its Libby vermiculite mine.

PacifiCorp (previously called Utah Power and Light) has an agreement with the E.P.A. to clean out asbestos from the substation in downtown Salt Lake City. They will be excavating and disposing of about 3,900 cubic yards of dust and soil contaminated by asbestos.

In March, 2008, Grace agreed to pay $250 million for government cleanup at the Libby mine. That is the largest fine every imposed under the E.P.A.’s Superfund cleanup program.

Asbestos cleanup will clearly be ongoing for quite some time yet. It can be very expensive, as it requires specially-trained workers, and must be done to a high standard to make each contaminated area safe again.

Need to file a lawsuit in Michigan. We are located in Maryland. How do we do it?

We are an Asbestos Abatement company in MD and were contracted by P.R.O.S. (a company located in Michigan) to do abatement work on a Steak & Ale restaurant in MD. They owe us $19,500 and it is over 60 days due. Aside from traveling to Michigan to sue them, do we have any other options?

Ok, two choices, one of which is to answer your question. Although you have given your state, I am not licensed in those states, so any information is intended as a general guideline and not as legal advice.

1. To answer your question, since you are a company (corporation), you will probably need to have an attorney sign the complaint and appear on your behalf. It is one of the disadvantages of being a corporation. However, since the corporation is a legal entity (you are not the corporation, and neither are its officers and directors).

That point aside, you prepare a complaint for filing, and you mail it to the proper court in Michigan, with the filing fee, etc. It must be signed by the court. You then contact the sheriff’s office in the appropriate county (probably the county of the defendant’s home office), and have the company served. Still, you will need a Michigan attorney to receive process, and you will need to go to Michigan for depositions (since you chose to use the courts, you must appear for depositions.

2. I gave you the bum’s rush because … I think you might want to consider filing suit in Maryland. You were contracted, IN MARYLAND. The work to be performed was IN MARYLAND. As such, the defendant probably has the minimum contacts necessary to invoke the long-arm jurisdiction of the Maryland court. You will need to serve the Michigan corp in Michigan, but the proceedings are in Maryland. THEY would then need to obtain a Maryland attorney and fight the action in YOUR back yard. Much better strategically for you.

EVEN IF the contract provides that Michigan law applies, a Maryland court can apply those laws. The caveat is this: If the contract provides that the action must occur in Michigan (choice of laws and venue section of contract), then you will need to commence the action in Michigan.

Finally, a thought to keep in mind. Filing a legal document takes two things: A summons and complaint. It is filed by the Clerk of Court, who is simply an administrator who takes the money and makes the file. You do not need to go to Michigan to begin the lawsuit, but will need an attorney to appear and represent you at court hearings. This is why many of the activities can be done by mail. The clerk does not care if she gets the documents by mail or over the counter. However, whenever you send anything to the clerk, enclose two (2) extra copies, and ask the clerk, in your cover letter, to return the additional copies, FILE STAMPED, in an envelope (which you provide, postage prepaid).

Asbestos is an old house?

The house we are planning to buy is 123 years old and the home inspector’s report says that there is ‘asbestos-like’ material in the exterior chimneys.

Mind you, it was a visual inspection and no other chemical tests were done. But where else in a house that age would we test for asbestos? Where were the common areas, if any?

Also, there was an addition built on around the early fifties. I’m guessing more asbestos would have been used in that area, but where exactly should we be looking?

The evaluation company is asking for this list (even though we think they should already know where to look, since this is their business!) but I would like to get your input so I’m not going into this blindly.

It may turn out that we renegotiate the price etc. based on this so it’s really important! Thanks in advance.

Asbestos can typically be found in exterior siding tiles, around air ducts, some drywall type materials and under vinyl flooring. They used these products up until the late 70’s I believe. Asbestos exterior siding tiles are pretty easy to spot (they tend to all look about the same) Air ducts covered in a white insulation are usually suspect to asbestos. Dated vinyl flooring was installed with a material containing asbestos underneath.
Remember that is is only harmful if disturbed. Look for visual suspects and consider any older vinyl floors or older drywall materials to contain asbestos if you have future plans to disturb the materials in those areas.
When you plan a remodel have area tested before pulling up floors and knocking down walls or removing the isulation from air ducts.

If you have had past exposure to asbestos can new exposure trigger more problems?

My husband has lung scarring and copd from asbestos exposure. This morning he was working on leaking pipe in our apartment building basement and he turned all grey and had coughing fits and trouble breathing. I looked around and realized that we have damaged exposed asbestos on a lot of pipes. He has only been doing this job for 3 years and became symptomatic of copd 18 months ago. OSHA can’t do a thing as they are there to ensure the health and safety of “workers”. From your description, it sounds like you guys own the apartment building or at least your husband was fixing a leaking pipe in the building in which you rent. Either way, OSHA has no jurisdiction.

A history of asbestos exposure may not be volunteered to the doctor at an early stage as it may have occurred 30, 40, 50 or even more years prior to seeing the doctor and may have been forgotten about. A striking feature of asbestos disease is this long latency period between exposure and onset of symptoms, the fibres laying dormant for many years before causing asbestos disease or symptoms for which medical advice is sought.

Some asbestos diseases require exposure to only very few asbestos fibres to cause illness, especially mesothelioma which can be caused by just one fibre being inhaled into the lungs! This adds to the above mentioned difficulty of no, or only poor, recollection of exposure to asbestos fibres and accurate diagnosis.

As chest physicians become more aware of asbestos disease, due to its increasing incidence, and the need to ask patients at an early stage if they have ever been exposed to asbestos fibres, these difficulties become less and less of an issue, however, in addition to early history taking the following further difficulties regularly arise.

The radiological evidence (shown on x-ray films) is often misunderstood. This can often lead to a incorrect diagnosis being made in asbestos disease cases of pleural plaques and pleural thickening. This is usually due to inexperience and the fact that radiological evidence of asbestos pleural plaques is similar, to the inexperienced eye, to asbestos pleural thickening and vice versa.

This is important in the context of asbestos UK disease litigation as asbestos pleural plaques is currently not considered to be an “injury” by the UK courts for which compensation can be awarded! This is in spite of the fact that pleural plaques sufferers were routinely awarded compensation for twenty years prior to a Court of Appeal ruling in 2006.

Accurate diagnosis in cases of asbestos pleural thickening can be difficult due to the fact that apart from the potential for it to be radiologically confused with pleural plaques, it can also be confused with other non-asbestos related injuries or illnesses. For example, as part of the careful history taking in cases of suspected pleural thickening, it is important to ask the patient if they have ever had a fractured rib or ribs. The healing process of a fractured rib can leave behind radiological evidence that shows up on x-rays as pleural thickening. Other prior lung complications and conditions can also leave behind such evidence.

Difficulties can also arise when trying to arrive at an accurate diagnosis in cases of asbestosis. Asbestosis is the scarring of lung tissue caused by asbestos fibres in the lungs. The difficulty here is that scarring of lung tissue can be caused by other factors or foreign bodies entering the lungs and not just asbestos fibres. Lung scarring or fibrosis appears the same on x-ray films regardless of what has caused it. It is therefore crucial, perhaps more so than with any other asbestos disease, to ensure an early and very detailed history of significant exposure to asbestos fibres is taken and recorded as lung fibrosis can only be diagnosed as asbestosis if the patient has suffered significant and heavy exposure to asbestos fibres in the past.

Is asbestos ductwork concealed within walls a major concern? It is not visible so I dont know if its friable.?

Had home inspection and its seems around all the metal HVAC ductwork inside the walls seems to be asbestos insulation… ; ( On the ductwrk that’s visible, there is no insulation. Is this a health concern since it is within the walls or should I ask the seller to have this removed? Nothing on the internet really addresses this particular situation (asbestos insulation on metal ductwork within walls) so I figured I ask you guys.

asbestos is a known carcinogen, but I doubt there is anything to be concerned with. As long as you don’t disturb the insulation Alto you’re fine.
