Inspecting Your Roof

People generally make a habit of taking a good look at their roof in the autumn, before a long winter sets in. Unless you are having trouble with visible leakage, checking the roof a bit more often than once a year is advisable. Roofing material, like anything else, is subject to wear and tear, and is your first line of defense from the elements. Because every region of the country has different weather patterns, it is a good idea to know what to look for, and what to expect when it comes to caring for your roof. A roof that is neglected can cost you way much more than what it normally would in terms of damaged roof boards, studs, and even interior ceilings and walls. Here, we will look at how to inspect your roof, a little about types of roofing materials, and how to assess the damage.

How Often To Inspect

Although the rule of thumb is to inspect either annually or bi-annually, it depends on other factors. Checking annually is okay if there have been no extreme weather events in your locale, but it goes without saying that this is generally not the case. High rise buildings are often inspected on a monthly basis because of the wind factor. Although a bit extreme for the average home owner, it is a good idea to check your roof after a bad wind storm or an unusually harsh winter storm if possible. High winds can damage shingles, causing damage to the interior infrastructure, and large ice buildups can often damage flashing and the roof membrane. Ice buildup in gutters can push up under the edge of the roof, leading to infrastructure damage.

What To Look For

Just going up on the roof and looking around isn’t enough. You will need to look for specific things. Let’s look at what needs to be done:

1. Check flashings on the roof. Flashings are the metal
pieces in a roof that cover interruptions in the roof
plane, such as around dormers, chimneys, and vent
pipes. If it appears there is damage, fix these
problems right away, or call a roof contractor and
have them fix problems. Inadequate or faulty flashing
will allow snow meltage to enter the interior, causing
not only infrastructure rot, but possible damage to
interior walls.
2. Asphalt roofing materials have a granular surface,
much like fine gravel. As the asphalt ages, it
becomes brittle, and these granules will come out
over time. If you see a lot of these granules in
gutters, chances are the roof is aging. Look for
bare spots in asphalt shingles, and inspect closely
for signs of tearing or warpage. If you notice
shingles curling up, it is time for replacement.
3. If your roof has wooden shake or shingles, look
for signs of dry rot or warpage depending on the
climate of your locale. Know the difference between
wooden shakes and shingles – shakes are hand-split on
at least one face and either tapered or straight.
Shingles are sawn and tapered. If an inspection
reveals that approximately one third of the shingles
or shakes have any sign of the above damages, it is
time to replace the roof. Never walk on a wooden
shake or shingle roof when inspecting.
4. A metal roof has a design life of 50 years if
maintained and properly painted. Metal roofing
comes in galvanized iron or steel, aluminum, copper,
and even lead in older homes. Each has its own wear
characteristics. Look for signs of pitting, rusting
and corrosion that can be the natural results of
aging. Look for loose or open seams and joints that
can lead to leaking.
5. Slate, clay tile, and asbestos cement shingles
are high end, but will last the lifetime of the
home if cared for properly. They are subject to
ice damage in intemperate climates. Because they are
so brittle and easily broken, the best way to inspect
them is by using binoculars to get a close look at
their condition. Check for broken, chipped or missing
pieces.

If you are not capable of climbing to high spaces, call a trusted roofing contractor to do the inspection for you. Many of them will do so free of charge, in hopes of getting your business. Many roofing contractors can be scheduled on a bi-yearly basis to come and inspect your roof. In any case, you can inspect a roof quite well using binoculars. Always inspect under eaves and overhangs to look for damage that might indicate water leakage, especially at points of the roof that don’t conform to the regular roof plane, such as dormers or skylights. Taking the time to do a thorough inspection on a regular basis will save you a lot of money in the long run.

* abdominal swelling;

* pain of the abdomen;

* blood clotting problems;

* chest pain;

* chronic cough;

* heart palpitations;

* fever;

* labored breath; and

* weight loss.

Pleural, peritoneal and pericardial mesothelioma are all possible variations of the deadly cancer, with pleural (lung) mesothelioma the most commonly manifested version of the disease.

High-Risk Professions

Though the use of asbestos is now regulated by laws and regulations, the disease’s long dormancy period means that it still has a high number of potential victims. Professions at a high risk for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma are those which involved repeated exposure to asbestos in its industrial forms. These professions include:

* electricians;

* painters;

* insulators;

* carpenters;

* bricklayers;

* construction workers;

* mechanics; and

* other tradespeople, especially those who were involved with commercial or home construction before the 1970s.

The families of these workers were also at risk, since they may have inhaled or ingested asbestos through the employee’s clothing or hair.

If I buy a home with asbestos siding or roof do I need to have it removed?What are the costs?

Exterior asbestos is often just best left intact. In many states, it is against the law to drill, or cut it, and they require you to have a licensed contractor to remove it. Naturally, this is expensive.

You can easily paint over the siding, or even install new siding over it.

If you happen to be in an area that will allow you to remove it yourself, you need to wear safety equipment (dust particle mask, eye protection, etc) to keep the dust of removing it from getting into your lungs, eyes, etc. Disposal of asbestos containing product may be a problem tho… so check into that, before tackling the project.

The real danger with asbestos, is when the tiny fibers get into your lungs. They do not decompose… this means they are there for the rest of your life, and they can cause cancer.

Asbestos was popular for a long time, as a ‘fire proofing’ material. A lot of homes were built using asbestos tiles, to help make them more fire resistant.

The History of Asbestos Use

Asbestos was called the “miracle mineral” by the Greeks especially because it could withstand heat. Due to this characteristic of this element, it was widely used in the construction industry until the late 1900s. Until recently, the bad effects of using this material weren’t known to the public, but when it came to light, it was too late. Mesothelioma – What Products Contain Asbestos

Asbestos is a fibrous form of a few different minerals. It is very unique in nature in that it is a natural heat repellent. It melts only at the highest of temperatures. We often hear and read about asbestos being used in products. This is a rather vague statement. Just what products are we talking about here? Every sailor can tell you fire is their biggest fear at sea. Asbestos served as a great insulator on ships and was used extensively. Ships are great and all as an example, but what about something more common? Well, consider your car. The brakes work by pushing pads against a moving source. As the pads are pushed harder, the moving source slows and so do the wheels. This creates a lot of heat. To combat it, the pads on most vehicles were largely made of asbestos for decades!

How about homes and buildings? Fire is again a concern, so asbestos was used in everything from wall insulation to roof shingles to the “popcorn” on ceilings to the insulation around pipes leading from the water heater to…well, just about everything.

The list of products incorporating asbestos are nearly endless. For a long period of time, fire safety equipment used by emergency personnel actually incorporated it! Imagine that! The fortunate news is Mesothelioma did not develop in a vast majority of people who were exposed to asbestos. Given the fact the survival rate is very low, this meant millions of deaths were avoided.

Make your Home Ready for Selling

Doing quick fixes to your home before selling it really pays off. But you have to take note of which fixes would be best for your house and which will give you the biggest return in the future. You should also take note of dated wood paneling. Old wood paneling has gone out of style and a fresh coat of paint would be the ticket to improving it.

You will also need to scrape off and repaint older popcorn ceilings that often contain hazardous asbestos.

Kitchen Improvements

The most expensive items to replace in a kitchen are usually the appliances and cabinets. If these are already dated and dilapidated, then you might want to replace them. It might be very difficult to sell the house if buyers see that your kitchen is beat-up.

For cabinets, resurfacing is your option. You can also add a fresh coat of paint and new hardware to the cabinets.

Bathrooms

Nothing turns off buyers more than dirty and neglected bathrooms. You must remember that the bathroom is one of the most visited areas in the house. Therefore, it is very important to keep it clean and spick-and-span all the time. New floors, fixtures and lights in the bathroom also pay off.

Roofs and the Exterior

When buyers see that the roof of the house needs to be replaced, then they tend to shy away from that. Of course, they wouldn’t want to have that extra cost on their shoulders. If you see that the roof needs to be replaced, then, by all means, replace it.

Causes of Lung Cancer – Information You Need to Know

More men and women die from lung cancer than any other cancers. Who is most susceptible to this disease? Nearly 70 percent of the elderly 65 and older will be diagnosed with this disease. Three percent of lung cancer cases have appeared in people younger than 45 years old.

Until the 1930s, cancer of the lungs was not as prevalent but still quite common. However, once there was an increase of tobacco smoking use, lung cancer cases rose drastically. As information and education circulates about the hidden dangers of smoking, lung cancer related deaths are beginning to see a decline. Despite all the education and the public awareness, it’s still a common human cancer. For women, breast cancer is no longer the number one killer. Lung cancer has exceeded breast cancer related deaths.

Lung Cancer Causes

Smoking – Most lung cancer related deaths (about 90 percent) have been associated with smoking. Each time a person smokes a cigarette, they increase their chances of getting lung cancer. Based upon doctors’ formula regarding the quantity of packs to the amount of years smoked, someone who has a 30 pack to year history has a greater chance to develop lung cancer. For those people who smoke two, three or more packs a day, statistics show that one in seven diagnosed will die from the disease. Cigarette smoking is not the only culprit to lung cancer. Cigar smoking and pipe smoking can also lead to the disease at a lower rate. Those who smoke cigars or pipe smoke are five times more likely to get lung cancer than a person who never smoked.

The smoke found in tobacco has over 4,000 element compounds. Many of these are cancer causing. Two key carcinogens are polycyclic aromatic hdrycarbons and nitrosamines. Once a person has given up tobacco use, lung cancer risks decreases every year. Normal cells will begin to grow and outnumber damaged lung cells. After 15 years of not smoking, lung processes and the threat of the disease gets close to that of someone who has never smoked.

Passive Smoking – What is passive smoking? This is when people who are in close quarters smokers breathe in the smoke filled air. Those who don’t smoke have a 24 percent likelihood to develop lung cancer if they live with a smoker. Nearly 3,000 deaths can be associated with passive smoking.

Asbestos Fibers – Mesothelioma and lung cancer through asbestos exposure is high. People who work in asbestos related fields and smoke dramatically increase their chances of getting a lung cancer connected disease. When compared with their non smoking counterparts, they have a 50 to 90 percent greater risk of getting lung cancer or other lung related illness.

Radon Gas – Radon gas has been documented to be the next leading cause in lung cancer deaths, killing anywhere from 15,000 to 22,000 people in the United States every year. Like asbestos exposure, radon exposure augments lung cancer risks. The gas is able to travel through soil. It can gain entrance into homes by the gaps found in its foundation, its drains and its pipes. Nearly one in 15 homes is found with dangerous level of radon gas according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Can a person tell if their home has high amounts of radon gas? Only by a kit. The gas cannot be smelled, nor can be it seen.

Genetics – It’s true that most cases of lung cancer can be linked back to smoking. However, not every smoker will get the disease. That means other factors like genetics could play a part behind the causes of lung cancer. Studies have revealed that cancer can and does occur in families that have smokers and nonsmokers. It would seem a gene can increase the vulnerability of smokers in getting lung cancer.

Lung Diseases – When a smoker or even non smoker has other lung diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), they are at an increased risk to develop the disease even if they quit smoking and all the effects have worn away.

History of Lung Disease – People with a record of lung cancer are at a higher risk of developing it a second time. People who have survived a non-small cell lung cancers have a one to two percent risk to getting the disease a second time while those who have beaten small cell lung cancers have a six percent increase each year.

Air Pollution – The chances of getting lung cancer from air pollution is raised in individuals that breathe in polluted air every day. Pollution from cars, power plants and industrialized areas increases these risks. Yet, they only account for one percent of lung cancer related deaths. Experts have suggested that every day exposure to air heavily polluted can be compared to passive smoking.

What do I do about my ugly siding on my house possibly having asbestos in it?

I think my ugly siding has asbestos in it. It is like a fake shingle siding, probably from the 50’s when the house was built. It is in good shape but not attractive. The color is the main thing we don’t like. Option 1 is to just paint over it, but that is just a temporary fix since the siding itself is ugly. Can someone just put siding over it? I think this will be expensive!

I worked on a house in Montana 3 years ago, which had asbestos shingles as siding. The customer wanted them removed, and a different type of siding installed.

I went to the local permit/code office and was told I couldn’t do that, even as a licensed contractor.

Remediation of asbestos is potentially dangerous, and it’s disposal is an issue as well. There are no specific laws that I know of however, regarding painting over, or siding over asbestos siding.

It may be expensive, in that if it’s discovered to be asbestos based, you might be required to have it removed in any case?

I understand budgetary constraints, but if you plan to remain in the house for the long term, it seems to me, it would be worth it to explore the removal and disposal.

Certainly if you sold the house you’d be obligated to disclose the substance of the siding, especially if it is in fact asbestos based.

Is asbestos in popcorn ceiling least dangerous form of asbestos?

I have asbestos in my popcorn ceiling. I am paying professionals to come and remove it.

Just out of curiosity though, after all my internet research, it seems like the asbestos in the join compound is only 3-5% of the compound itself. The rest of the compound is other misc. material. I am very scared of asbestos, so even if it was the least dangerous, I would never do the task myself. But just out of curiosity, it seems like it is the “least” dangerous form of asbestos (if there is such a thing).. is that correct?

USA Asbestos is asbestos is asbestos. There are different types of asbestos, and some types are nastier than the others, but it is all dangerous. 3 to 5 percent is not a high concentration of asbestos, BUT, it is still asbestos and if it gets in your lungs, you might be in for some health problems. Asbestos – even 100% – cannot hurt you until it gets in your lungs. It will not “fall out” of a popcorn ceiling. If you scrape, cut, smash or otherwise damage the ceiling, asbestos will be released into the air, and then you can breathe it in and it will be dangerous.

Asbestos in popcorn ceilings from 1984?

Our home was built in 1984. (A townhome) We want to remove the old popcorn ceilings. I don’t think it should have asbestos in the ceilings … since it was in 1984, am I right? Also, they remodeled our kitchen before we moved in and they re-did the ceiling in the kitchen, taking off the popcorn and painting it. That makes me think it is safe to take down.

Asbestos was gone in the early 70’s. You’re safe.

Asbestos textured ceiling?

We purchased a house about 2 years ago that was built in 1979! We recently decided to remodel. The home has textured ceilings through out which is an eye sore to say the least! We had pretty much decided to go ahead and scrap the texture and refinish the surface until we came across an article on asbestos! How likely is it that a house built in Louisiana in 1979 would contain asbestos and shouldn’t we have been made aware of this when we purchased the home?

If the acoustic textured ceilings contains asbestos (like most did during that time), it is a problem. Scraping the texture off will make a lot of dust and the dust will remain if not properly abated. There should have been a standard form included with all the real estate disclosure papers that said there may be asbestos in the house. There is generally not any obligation to actually check and find out. You just get a piece of paper that says there could be some, but that the seller doesn’t know or care.

At this point, have somebody come out and take some samples. If it contains asbestos, there are guidelines on how to remove it or encapsulate it.

If the ceilings haven’t been painted, you can spray a small section at a time with a fine mist of soapy water till it is about saturated and the popcorn texture should scrape off in sheets pretty easily without making much dust. Or if has been painted, you can carefully install another layer of sheetrock over the existing ceiling and start from there with a new tape, float, texture, and paint. Either way, get the correct protective stuff and dust covering and containment stuff and be careful not to make or leave any dust. Best to get the guidelines and follow them.

The mesothelioma cause in this case is the asbestos dust particles settled on the clothes, shoes and hair of the asbestos workers that their family members inhaled. Workers should shower and change their clothing to avoid the possibility of exposing family members to asbestos particles. Workers should also put on protective equipments to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure.
