Cleaning Asbestos Dust
Thursday, January 6th, 2011
Can anyone give me an imformed answer about asbestos?
I have just found out that I been cleaning up asbestos dust for the past 12 months at my work place. I am a little concerned as my boss and people above him are running round like headless chickens. The want to dispose of my uniform and all the items near the asbestos. They also advice me to go to the docters. Should I be concerned or alarmed!
Stevejulie2926,
You should be concerned and alarmed. Breathing airborne asbestos fibers has been associated with – Asbestosis – a serious lung disease. Lung cancer. Mesothelioma-a cancer of the lining of the lung or abdominal cavities. It is small wonder that your superiors are panicking. You should be sure to keep the clothing that you have been using, sealed in a plastic bag and any other proof of your activities. (witnesses/statements if possible, pictures etc) Management will try to lessen their responsibility in this matter. Especially if you develop any illness due to your cleaning activities. The bad news is that you have been placed at risk. You do not state in which country you incurred this risk, but you should seek a medical examination, explaining the details to your doctor – not the doctor who has anything to do with your place of work – and afterwards, seek advice from a legal expert. I add some links, but they may not be relevant to your country. I wish you well.
