how do i get rid of artex on plaster board walls with little damage?

Is it possible to get rid of artex from plaster board walls with little damage? I live in a council property and accepted the house 11 years ago with artex halfway down every wall and on the ceiling in the livingroom. I have been told that I have to ask permission to remove it as it may cause damage and the council will charge me to plaster it. I cant afford to pay a plasterer to do it for me. It has already been tested and cleared of asbestos. The council wont remove it or plaster it for me and if i remove it and it causes damage they will charge me for replastering even although it was the tenant before me that put it up??????
Its definitely artex and on quite thick, have removed the dado rail which was placed just below the artex and already part of the plaster underneith has came away, I am going to try and remove some with the wallpaper steamer tomorrow n see how it goes, but hey ho if it does’nt work will just have to let the council do it n foot the bill.

There is a product on the market for plastering over it – ask in a good hardware shop – B&Q ? – it is meant to be used by amateurs – with a little care you can do it

I know there is Asbestos in the Artex in my house, it is all over the house, is there any help from Gov’ment?

Q. Is there help with the cost of this, as it’s in most of the rooms in our home. The walls are bulging out and flaking,in some of the rooms. I have heard that you can claim on your insurance, is this correct.

no help from anyone for artex removal , infact it has minimal content of asbestos in it an is to become declassified as hazrdous, this means using common sense when removing it by simply using a steamer and not a sander as this simply creates dust.
it really is not as dangerous in artex as people who do not know about asbestos make out there are far more deadly versions in pipe lagging and boiler house along with ships etc where it is used in full 100%quantities of blue and brown asbestos, insurance claims are not accepted as it is simply classed as a decorative finish which is not covered in any form. I actually remve the stuff for a living ,

The last I know of were supplies that were manifactured before 1991 by subsidiaries of a certain company. These ones contained asbestos. I don’t think they do anymore. It has been rectifed. Plastic cement is available as both gel (tube or gun form) and liquid (bottle with applicator).

What are all the normal tests done on a home before buying it?

e.g. asbestos, lead pipe, water table, septic tank, blah blah blah. What do I need to know? For the record, I’m planning on tearing out or at least trumping the oil heating system with a combo of solar paneling, wind and hydro turbine and geo-thermal system. But it will be my first home purchase

Popcorn Ceiling Asbestos?

I am moving into a home built in 1964. The ceilings have a popcorn finish that we want to remove. We do not know for sure if it has asbestos. We do not plan on having it tested. We have found someone who will scrape the ceiling for us. My question is, are we doing anything illegal by not having it tested? If in fact it does get removed and we later learn that there was asbestos, can we be liable for anything? I’ve lived in a home that had the ceilings scraped before, and chances are it had asbestos and we are doing fine. If this stuff does get removed “improperly” how long can the asbestos linger in the air and potentially cause problems?

Popcorn ceilings may be painted with lead paint which effects the brain, over the asbestos which attacks your nervous system and causes cancer, it takes about 20 years…

How dangerous is ‘trace asbestos’ in acoustic ceiling covering?

We had the acoustic ceiling stuff tested at a lab and it came back with ‘trace’ amounts of chrysotile. This means there was less than 1% asbestos. I have no idea if this is a lot or not. I understand asbestos is a cancer danger and that you don’t want to breathe the stuff. My question is how dangerous would it be to remove the ceiling stuff ourselves? We’d really like to get it out of one of the bedrooms, not the whole house necessarily. I also understand that you can pay to have professionals do the job, which isn’t really an option for budget reasons.

My plan would be to wet down the ceiling and scrape the stuff into a plastic bag and get it out of the house before it dries. We’d wear masks and goggles and gloves. Anyone know if this is completely foolish or actually reasonable? Sources would probably help with this answer if you happen to have any. Thanks in advance.

The safest way would be to enlist the services of a professional. You would be keeping your family from risk and ensuring that the hazardous waste is disposed of properly. Not only should you be concerned with getting the stuff out of the house safely but what about after that the garbage men, neighborhood kids, landfill workers, wildlife around the landfill, landfill run off and those who may have to live around the landfill for budget reason.

I am not sure if you have 2′ x 2′ or 2′ x 4′ asbestos ceiling tiles in a drop ceiling or 1′ x 1′ interlocking tiles or glued in place ceiling tiles or a sprayed on asbestos coating.

The cheapest way to keep your family safe would be to encapsulate the problem areas and just leave it alone.

Paint over the encapsulated area or install another lower ceiling if you don’t like the texture.

You are at the most risk from asbestos when it is disturbed so my advice would be to seal it and cover it.

If you want to remove it yourself to save some money dispose of it properly and legally

oh my god… contact your council they will send someone to remove it for you…..

asbestos is safe when its behind a solid surface like concrete but if its exposed do not go near it….. even air movement can create dust/ flake particles to become dislodged from it…. if these are inhaled they permanently damage your lungs … your lungs can not regenerate the parts that the particles have eaten away….

i used to work for the council and the asbestos officer gave me a long talk about it…. the longer it out in the open the more damage it will do

how can i safely reomove asbestos ducts from my home?

I am a homeowner, and have some non-friable asbestos ducts running from my furnace that i need to remove before getting my new furnace installed. I DO NOT have the money to pay an abatement service. I know how to dispose of the asbestos, and know where to dispose of it, but I don’t know how to go about it, and am having problems finding such info on the web. HELP!?

Take the ducts out in the largest pieces you can as not to make dust by breaking it up. Use a spray bottle of water on the ducts to keep them wet this keeps it from becoming friable. Do not use a saw,grinder or other tool that will throw the asbestos into the air. It is a good thing to also wear a dust mask when doing this. Do not forget to put the pieces in plastic 6mm bags.

Insul-brick contain asbestos?

My home is a house built in 1961 and has some weird type of siding on it. It is fake brick panels, thick, and seems fiberish on the back of it. It was put over wood panels. I recently had my home inspected and he said I should have it tested for asbestos. I’ve been doing some research online and have found what looks to be just like what I have in the following links, but I can’t find proof that it contains asbestos. What I have found it that it is extremely flammable.

well the words asbestos and flammable dont generally go together…there are still some old houses in our town that have this kind of brick siding and i dont recall any of them having to do anything special to have it torn off or covered…if it makes you feel better have it tested…

the flat i am buying was built in the late sixties and has artex cielings is this likely to be asbestos and is?

It probably has about 3% of white asbestos in it.

As long as it is painted with water based paint, or emulsion from time to time it will be OK.

if I was living with someone who died from mesothelioma could I be subject to the cancer?

I lived with my sons grandparents for about 6 years in the early 90’s and the grandfather passed away from asbestos cancer in his stomach about 12 years ago. Knowing that our clothes were washed together and being a part of the household, would it be possible? My son brought it up today and now it has concerned me.

Accoutic ceiling removed last week & I don’t know if it had asbestos. Can the air be tested after the fact?

The person who removed it, wet it & with a putty knife put it into a bucket & bagged the room & took everything with him. Can someone come out and test the air or is it to late?

The ceiling tiles should have been analyzed for asbestos content prior to removal. The only thing you can do now is close off the room(s), agitate the air with a fan and take air samples.
