Asbestos on steam pipes, anyway to “SEAL” it so not become friable?

We dont have thousands of dollars to have it removed. ALSO wonder why it wasnt a code violation when we purchased home, should city have had sellers remove it?

There is no way to seal it without spending money. It will cost as much to properly seal it as remove it since it will have to be done by proffesionals. The question is, how do you know it is asbestos and why did your home inspection not disclose this. If asbestos, you could sue your home inspector. If the owners knew and did not disclose it, you could sue them. Only a lawyer will know the best route in your state. As for the city, they have no responsibility. The government makes it the responsibility of the people involved.

If you have not had the material tested, you must do that first before you panic. You can not tell by looking unless it is printed on the pipe (and that is very, very rare).
