Seal Asbestos

What is sealing and respraying a ceiling?
I was considering removing the popcorn celing in the house I just bought. I found out that it most likely contains asbestos. I was told that instead of removing the asbestos (which is costly) I also have the option of sealing and respraying. Does this give the same look as if I were to remove the asbestos popcorn look? Or will this simply lock in the asbestos fibers?
Sealing basically means they seal in the asbestos to make sure it can’t affect anything unless disturbed, which in this case probably means sheet-rocking over the top of the existing ceiling and then taping, painting, etc.
This method is quite common, and a lot cheaper. Plus, if you have it removed and taken to the dump, it remains ‘yours’ for all legal purposes involving it.
It will give the same look, it will only lower the ceiling about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.
They use this method on Asbestos siding and anywhere they can.
