The Truth About Home Water Purifiers
When was the last time you looked at the glass of water you were about to drink and wondered what’s in it?
Recent information from the Ralph Nader Research Institute via The Freedom of Information Act states: “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” Frankly, I was shocked to hear this statistic and began thinking seriously about finding out more information about one of those home water purifiers.
There are many reasons to compare home water purifiers when thinking about personal well-being. Few people think about the level of contamination in everyday tap water. Some of the causes include agricultural runoff and industrial/household chemicals. While synthetic chemical use has improved convenience and productivity in society, the cost to the human body comes at an astounding price…our health.
So why not rely on the government to protect our wellness? Over time the quality of public drinking water has gradually diminished. Our government continues to ignore the problems plaguing our water consumption by adding poisonous chlorine, turning a blind eye to corporations that pollute and failing to address other recent threats to our public water supply.
In addition, here are some other facts you may not be aware of…
Americans spend billions on bottled water every year and the majority of its unknowingly deceived consumers actually believe that a bottle of water is healthier and/or safer for them than tap water, when in fact, this is not true. Tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency while bottled water, considered a “food”, is standardized by the US Food and Drug Administration. Shockingly, the EPA regulations for tap water are stricter than the FDA’s on bottled water! This means you can purchase bottled water that’s not fit to be consumed as tap water.
In addition, the plastics used to hold bottled water contain chemical contaminants that seep into the liquid over time, which has been known to result in cancer-causing and hormonal issues. Plus it’s expensive ($2+ for a single bottle), inconvenient to obtain and immediately begins storing bacteria upon opening. Finally, upon recycling it leeches into ground water where it eventually winds up in the public water supply.
So why not try to compare different types of filters and their respective methods?
Some filtration systems to consider would include Reverse Osmosis, carbon, ultra violet light and even combining two or more filtration-type technologies.
- Reverse Osmosis (or distilling water) was originally created in the 50’s to remove salt from sea water. This was conducted by passing its molecules through a layer/membrane. However, there are drawbacks to this type of filter. Unfortunately, essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium are removed during the process. Not something that’s very beneficial for a growing child. Also, in order to produce one purified gallon, three must be wasted.
- Carbon filters are probably the most common type sold today. While the pitchers themselves are relatively inexpensive, the cost of the filters needed, are not. They do seem to improve the overall taste of tap water, but do not remove the harmful chemicals contained within. Lastly, if you pass hot water through the filter, it allows the carbon to release any previous waste trapped in it.
- Ultra Violet light has been shown to kill any live viruses and/or bacteria contained in drinking water, however, it does not remove other matter such as chlorine, lead, asbestos and other harmful chemicals.
- However, when partnering multi-stage filtration technologies, like those used in home water purifiers, there seems to be a positive effect that ultimately removes all of the previously mentioned contaminants (and additionally parasites), leaving essential natural trace minerals intact and enabling the water you drink to be safe.
Make no mistake about it, as we begin to understand how water controls literally every aspect of our well-being and essential daily tasks, we can then recognize its vital importance in our lives. Being that more than 70% of every human body is water, it is our primary foundation. However, like any other structure, if its components are of poor quality, the chances of it standing the test of time, is surely weakened.
So do yourself a favor and take the time to compare home water purifiers. If you’re truly concerned about the health of your family, make sure that one you invest in is a quality product that stands out above the rest.
