Mesothelioma (What to exspect?)?

My Aunt was diagnosed with this about two months ago. The doctors have told our family it is inoperable. The symptoms she is having now is flluid buildup in her lungs which has to be removed about every 4 days. I wanted to know if anyone knows what to exspect from here. They will give her a kimo treatment in a few days, but I wonder if this will do any good. If anyone can tell me about how long someone with this lives once it gets to this stage. Thank you so much, any help will be greatly appreciated.
I wanted to know is it time to call hospice or how long we should wait?

Rhonda, I am sorry to hear about your aunt. Unfortunately, we do not have an effective treatment for Mesothelioma. Chemo will not cure her if that is what you mean by do any good. They are most likely giving it to her hoping she will respond well and give her more time. Her oncologist will know when it’s time to call hospice. It will largely depend on her response to chemo, her overall health and how much assistance she needs. It is impossible for anyone to know how much time she has without having more information. It is best to ask her oncologist and even then it will only be an estimate. Keep in mind doctors usually give patients and their families information in small doses as telling them everything at once is too overwhelming. You and your aunt should keep a list of questions to ask the doctor at each appointment. Just write them down when you think of them. I hope this helps a little. Best of luck to both of you.

Most of the minerals on your list can be many colours, the different colours caused by different impurities in them.

For example, quartz can be a wide range of colours, and 2 others on your list, amethyst and citrine, are both types of quartz. Both get their colour from iron, and if amethyst is heated it becomes citrine.

Beryl is another gem that can be various colours. Green beryl is emerald and gets its colour from chromium. Aquamarine is pale blue beryl and gets its colour from iron. Morganite is pink beryl and gets its colour from manganese.

Silver and gold are both elements, so they’re that colour because that’s how they reflect the light.

Trilobites are a type of fossil so their colour will depend on what rock they are in.

If you google them you should be able to find out which elements cause the different forms of each mineral, or look on wikipedia.

Is it possible to get rid of artex from plaster board walls with little damage? I live in a council property and accepted the house 11 years ago with artex halfway down every wall and on the ceiling in the livingroom. I have been told that I have to ask permission to remove it as it may cause damage and the council will charge me to plaster it. I cant afford to pay a plasterer to do it for me. It has already been tested and cleared of asbestos. The council wont remove it or plaster it for me and if i remove it and it causes damage they will charge me for replastering even although it was the tenant before me that put it up??????
Its definitely artex and on quite thick, have removed the dado rail which was placed just below the artex and already part of the plaster underneith has came away, I am going to try and remove some with the wallpaper steamer tomorrow n see how it goes, but hey ho if it does’nt work will just have to let the council do it n foot the bill.

There is a product on the market for plastering over it – ask in a good hardware shop – B&Q ? – it is meant to be used by amateurs – with a little care you can do it

Does old Sheetrock sometimes contain Asbestos?

I have old sheetrock that is cracked and peices missing in the basement of my house, I am wondering if I should be concerned, I have read that some sheetrock did contain asbestos and I also read that sheetrock did not, that the compound holding the sheetrock together may have. These peices of sheetrock are not compounded nor are they plastered they are only nailed in.

Sheetrock (aka drywall) is just compressed gypsum with paper covering it. I’ve never heard of any that had asbestos. Asbestos was usually used in insulation and roofing materials. Plus, even if there were asbestos, the way to get rid of it is not to tear it out, since that just puts it out into the air. Instead, you need to encapsulate it. All that means is paint over it, and you’ll be fine.

and that most states ALREADY have these laws on the books, and that we’re talking about less than 2% of our total medical costs anyway for ALL costs related to judgments and medical liability insurance,

Why is anyone still talking about this?

I suppose it could be a danger if you were in the heavy processing of these items. On the other hand, people who have never smoked still get lung cancer, as did the wife of Christopher Reeves.

They say paint, intensive gasoline fumes, and other chemicals infiltrating our air can cause this as well.

My sister died with it and it was thought to be strictly from stress.

We are all at a certain risk level just by living in a society. Don’t worry about it though – worry can cause cancer too.

Are the reasons Mike Holmes provides for preferring cheaper alternatives to R-2000 compelling?

Wondering if this is a good price for roughly 60-70 ft of pipe in basement? Also wondering if removal is better than encapsulation? It seems pretty well intact, but would rather get rid of it than ever have to worry about it.

Removal is better. Just make sure the contractor is licensed and you get copies of all the air test results. If they claim it is not required, you want one anyway. In Mass, that is probably a good price.

Garage door opener has failed 2 remotes don’t work so what is the least damaging way to get in?

The problem is in a detached one car garage. Power in the garage also operates a sprinkler system which is working. A keypad on the outside of the garage has not worked for some time. One remote is kept in the house and the other is in a car. Door is wooden, the opener is a “Sears” brand with an “eye” safety on each side (bottem)of the door and no key release or battery backup. Only one window that hasn’t been opened…ever, is painted shut and there is furnature in front of it in the garage. There is a skylight that seems to have been made of an acrylic sheet with a lot of silicone. Walls are wood frame construction with cement-asbestos tile siding. I know if I can get in any other way I can pull the release to open the door, but: What is the least damaging way to get in?

Considering removing the door molding but don’t know if I can then reach the catches. There is no particular emergengy. Possible junk fell infront of safety and turned off opener? Thanks.

Check the batteries in the remotes, they may be dead. As well check the battery in the keypad. One of these might do it for you.If not I would go for the window, heck it doesn’t work any way. This is probably cheaper than a skylight.

There will be no MSDS for concrete in place. The only way to tell if there is asbestos is to take some of the material to a local lab in a ziplock and have it tested ($25). If truely concrete it will not have asbestos.

Working with serpentine rock – is it dangerous?

I live in Potrero Hill in San Francisco. My house sits on a bedrock of serpentine rock. I would like to redo my backyard, till the soul and move a great deal of earth (not rock) around.

Is there any danger working with like this? I know when crushed it is dangerous, but does asbestos release from churning the soil?

From what I understand concerning asbestos. The surrounding soil will also contain asbestos fibers (chrysotile). The fibers are tiny and, once disturbed, may become airborne. Even natural erosion and routine activity can expose or release dust that contains asbestos fibers. For example:

• Disturbing dry soils can create dust containing asbestos fibers.
• Storm water runoff can concentrate fibers; which may become airborne when dried.
• Asbestos fibers are exposed to the surface of the soil by wind, rain, and natural land movement.

If you are certain that the serpentine rock contains asbestos (not all serpentine rock does) then you are best not to disturb the soil. It is recommended that the contaminated soils should be covered with new soil to avoid the chance of airborne fibers and dust.

To be absolutely sure and safe – maybe you could have the soil tested? then you will know what steps to take.

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Ann.

Asbestos in the attic of an old house?

I’ve just been to my grandparents old house, and we stuck our heads into the attic. The house was built in the 1920s-1930s, and the attic hasnt been used for ages. Well to the point it was really dusty up there, which looked like loads of plaster was on the floor. The celing didnt seem to have any insulation on it that looks like it would be asbestos, but I was wondering could all the dust be degraded asbestos, or would any potential asbestos insulation not degrade so easliy?

ive been a builder in uk for over 40 years …and have worked around the world inc usa and canada …have NEVER found any asbestos in any attic …asbestos was not used in insulation …the dangerous stuff was mainly pipe lagging in industrial units ….most of the stuff they call asbestos is in fact fibrous cement …so stop worrying but wear a mask for the dust …and get a good one …not a cheap one

If I had choice would cover up and not disturb, (If legal where you live). When you start removal of insulation you cause the fibers to become airborne and it is very difficult to contain. Also very expensive.

How much did you pay for asbestos floor tile removal per square foot?

If its not too much I’ll have it removed. If its high I would go over it with another material. I have searched far and wide on The Internet and can’t find a real world cost/price. I would like to know what the range is before interviewing a contractor.
I am seeking answers from persons who have actually paid a licensed asbestos removal company to remove asbestos tiles from concrete in a basement. Answers from persons who had this done in Northern Virginia would be particularly useful.

In that area, $2 a sqare foot with a minimum ($1k-$2k) will be average. It depends on several factors including the presence of asbestos in the mastic, the techniques needed to remove the tile and mastic, and factors such as is the room already clear (furniture, etc). Your best bet is to call three companies and get three estimates (free or find another company). Lastly, it also depends on the time of year with summer and Christmas being higher priced. Make sure any company is licensed and insured.

Is there asbestos in tile?

Our house was built in 1925. My husband is removing our bathroom floor tiles that haven’t been touched since then…we had only vinyl tiles on top of the old. He discovered these tiles are extremely difficult to take out they are very hard tiles under the vinyl we have now. Then when he tried to remove the hard tiles he had to remove concrete like stuff and sand like stuff. It’s been one hell of a job just to remove everything. He went down to the foundation of the house! I just started worrying now about asbestos. I remember how old homes have them. Is it possible there is asbestos in these? There is a lot of dust in the house because of the removal process. Anyone know? I have two small kids and I’m petrified. I’ve heard of vinyl tiles having them, but what about the other stuff in our floors?

Old tile can have asbestos. The ONLY way to know is to take a piece of each with glue/mastic on the back to a local lab to have it tested. You can not determine absolutely or not if asbestos is present by size, color, or texture. If he has already thrown it away, all you can do is wet clean the entire area and move on. If you can afford it, hiring an asbestos removal company to do it would be better or hire an asbestos consultant to checkk the area.

Please help- I just bought a house with asbestos on pipes?

Hi I just bought my house a week ago. My home inspector found a small spot of asbestos around the heating pipe while I was in the process of buying the house. I had another home inspector yesterday and found more evidence of asbestos.
The seller did not disclose any asbestos information. What can I do ?

Can I remove the asbestos myself? Can I sue the seller?

Thanks!

Dont even attempt to chip off or move the asbestos yourself. You can have it removed by qualified people. Dont endanger yourself and your family to such harmful material. If that house was built in earlier than the 70s then most likely the asbestos was included in the original plan. If it was built earlier and seller did not disclose info then you can surely sue that person. Asbestos is very dangerous. For a good lawyer specializing in asbestos, try this site http://www.mesotheliomalawyersite.net. There is always a lawyer ready to talk to you about your next moves.

If there IS asbestos in the unit, how much danger are we in? She said she has painted the walls several times over the years.

Asbestos in old apartment?

When I rented an apartment recently, the landlord made me sign a doc that said, “The apartment may contain asbestos.”

If there IS asbestos in the unit, how much danger are we in? She said she has painted the walls several times over the years.

I don’t want lung cancer 5 years from now!!
Oh, she said it may also be on the ceiling.
I’d say it was built before the 1970s.

Almost every older building was made containing at least some asbestos. Most asbestos is locked in place. The term used is non-friable. This is harmless in this condition but does not always stay that way. Weathering of asbestos siding and shingles can release fibers is among the ways this can happen. Normal abrasive wear of floor coverings containing asbestos is another way.

Friable asbestos is material that may become air-borne and represents a danger. The most common examples of this are asbestos pipe wrapping that gets wet and crumbles or deterioration of asbestos cement on heat ducts.

I would ask in writing if an asbestos evaluation of the building has been done and, if so, what the results were. That is almost a given with the transfer of any commercial property now, but may not have been done if the owner has stayed the same for the last 20 years.

Mesothelioma and asbestosis, the scarring diseases caused from asbestos exposure, typically take years to fester within a body before symptoms become visible. Filling your lungs with smoke if you’ve been exposed to asbestos will hasten asbestos disease and expose you to additional medical testing to properly diagnose your disease. It will also take years off of your life.

Asbestos and smoke are a deadly combination that hastens the onset of painful and fatal lung cancers.

Lung diseases such as asbestosis, pulmonary fibrosis, pleural disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma are caused by asbestos. The symptoms of these asbestos caused diseases are so similar to the lung diseases and cancers caused by smoking, that proper diagnosis is difficult. Treatment for mesothelioma or other asbestos caused diseases begin too late because of earlier misdiagnosis. With most cancers, and mesothelioma treatment in particular, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial to survival. A late diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma because an asbestos caused disease was mistaken for a smoking-related disease can take years off of your life, and lead to harsh and painful living during your last few years.

Medical research has also shown that smoking will hasten the attack of mesothelioma because of the internal damage caused by the toxic elements of cigarettes. Cigarette toxins eat away at your lungs. Asbestos fibers can then gain early entry into your vulnerable lungs and quickly take over or assist the cigarette toxins in creating your lung disease or cancer. Not smoking will not protect you from asbestos disease or mesothelioma, but it can reduce the severity and pain of mesothelioma and other asbestos caused diseases – and add years on to your life. If you don’t smoke and you have had exposure to asbestos, diagnosis will be swifter and you will be subject to less medical testing. Your chances of developing secondary lung diseases are substantially reduced.

Mesothelioma symptoms and lung disease symptoms from smoking typically both start with shortness of breath and trouble breathing. A productive cough typically follows, and the shortness of breath and the productive cough slowly worsen and persist. Because mesothelioma symptoms progress slowly, there is time to make a proper diagnosis if early treatment is sought. If the symptoms are ignored and are merely accepted as a side-effect of smoking, the disease has more time to become uncontrollable, and the asbestos disease will soon have control over you.

Mesothelioma affects the lining of internal organs, in a membrane called the mesothelium – hence the cancer name mesothelioma. This membrane does not affect just your lungs, it can affect most of your internal organs. Once mesothelioma symptoms of the lungs surface, such as breathing difficulties and productive coughs, the next step is typically an attack around the heart. Mesothelioma symptoms will then include chest pain, along with respiratory problems. This too can be misinterpreted as a sign of a smoking related disease, or a sign of old age or other heart and lung ailments. Mesothelioma is rare, and doctors will test according to the most likely disease to occur based on the symptoms. Because of that, it is very important to mention to your doctor your exposure to asbestos at your first visit.

Mesothelioma symptoms are slow to surface, and difficult to diagnose. Smoking while being exposed to asbestos will make proper diagnosis of mesothelioma difficult, and proper treatment may come too late to be of any benefit other than pain reduction and respiratory control. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos, not cigarettes – but cigarettes will make your mesothelioma worse. Don’t let the fibers of asbestos and the toxins of cigarettes team up on your lungs. Quit smoking and stay away from asbestos. If you must be exposed to asbestos, wear proper protection and don’t smoke. Don’t rush the disease, diagnose it. And you can’t diagnose the disease fast enough unless you quit smoking.

What does asbestos look like?

I am looking to buy a house that has insulation around a pipe in thte basement. My realtor said that it looks like asbestos. My dad, who is a pretty good carpenter, says that it may not be and that it should be tested. Is there a way to tell just by looking at it?

As others have stated, asbestos was incorporated into many different materials and can have many different appearances.

One of the many uses of asbestos was heating system pipe insulation. It may have been used for other types of pipes as well. Typically on a heating pipe asbestos insulation is in the form of a corrugated sheet wrapped around the pipe and taped. If you can actually see it from the end, it looks like cardboard, on the pipe just like paper wrapped around the pipe. There were other forms, so just because it does not look like that does not mean it is not asbestos.

If you are seriously considering purchasing this house, you really should order a home inspection. Do not trust what your realtor has to say, although he or she is working for you some tend to think they know more than they really do. Certainly don’t trust the seller’s realtor, they are trying to sell a house. Also, I would not accept an inspection report prepared on behalf of the seller or seller’s agent at face value.

You should have the inspection to identify issues other than this as well. A quality inspection may save you money on the purchase price and will certainly give you a better idea what to expect in the way of maintenance and repairs. I understand dad is a carpenter, but being a carpenter and a qualified inspector are very different fields. He would certainly be helpful in fixing problems but may not know all of the places to look.

If your inspector also suspects asbestos, a test should be ordered for an additional cost. The seller should cover at least part of this cost.

If it is asbestos, I would still not rule out purchasing the house if everything else suits you. If the system is in use, it may be OK to encapsulate the material and save the cost of removal. If removal is required, you can do it yourself once you are the homeowner in most locations. This type of material is fairly easy to deal with given a bit of reading and taking the proper precautions. Do not just jump in and start tearing it out without understanding the proper procedure, as you will contaminate other parts of the house. At some point in the future, I expect that testing will be required for all houses built before the substance was removed from production in which case an improper removal may cause problems when you sell.

I have an older fireplace (1950) that is painted corrugated wood. It’s the only way to describe it, sort of like corduroy or old asbestos siding–think ridges.

The are that it encompasses is about 1 foot in wide. My dad gave me a box of slate tiles he had left over from refacing a front stoop and I would like to adhere these to the wood around my fireplace, grout it etc.

I have a tile saw (and a husband not that I need one for this ) so the size, etc is no trouble. I just wish to know what kind of adhesive to use. As it’s a vertical surface it much adhere immediately so it doesn’t slide off.

Would liquid nail type of stuff work? I’m going to either Lowes or Home Depot in a few hours but would love some ideas before I go. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your input–have you ever done something like this?

Thanks again!

somewhere under the decorative “corregated” facade is the base structure. get down to that and then fasten a 1/4″ to 1/2″ wire mest to the structure with screws and brackets or whatever will secure the mesh and still sit flush to the surface. The adhesive witll grab the mesh and hold on better. as with the adhesive, slate is funny, i would ask home depot cuz slate has very few materials that it works well with. proly a morter or grout made for slate.

Mesothelioma is A Deadly Cancer

Many residents in Texas are at risk for a type of cancer they have never heard about, and no knowing about the cancer could mean a mis-diagnosis of the cancer or that victims of this horrible disease may ignore some key symptoms that could help with treatment.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which attacks the pleura, the lining of the lungs, around the lining of the heart and the lining of the abdominal cavity. While Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, over 3,000 cases are reported each year and many people pass away within a year or two of diagnosis.

The vast majority of Mesothelioma cases can be traced back to asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure happens primarily through jobs that were held working with asbestos as well as military service. Up until 20 years ago, when it was discovered that asbestos exposure caused Mesothelioma and other health problems, many materials and products that were used in construction and manufacturing contained asbestos.

Asbestos was used a lot during World War II when naval shipyards were producing massive amounts of ships for the war effort – at the same time, many products for constructing all types of buildings were using asbestos, as well as manufacturing and automotives. Until quite recently, products and processes that use asbestos were unregulated, however, the risks of asbestos use were well known and still companies continued to use the product freely.

Some companies provided very little protection or education about the risks of working with asbestos to their workers, which now leaves them on the hook for compensation for workers who have now contracted Mesothelioma or other asbestos exposure related illnesses. The list of workers that used asbestos in their jobs every day include ship yard workers, auto mechanics, boiler makers, brick layers, building inspectors, drywall installers, carpenters, roofers, electricians, iron workers painters, plasterers, plumbers, roofers and long shore men. Millions of people were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, and today, many of them are contracting Mesothelioma.

The workers are not the only people who contract this deadly cancer – the families, spouses and children of workers who were exposed to asbestos are also at risk for contracting Mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fine fiber that is easily attached to hair, skin, clothing and shoes and brought home. The fibers are nearly indestructible and when inhaled become lodged in the lining of the lungs, one day to become inflamed and causing Mesothelioma cancer.

If you, or one of your family members, has contracted Mesothelioma, it is time to contact a Mesothelioma lawyer to find out if you have a case for a Mesothelioma lawsuit. The biggest difficulty with asbestos exposure and the onset of Mesothelioma symptoms is the lengthy time between exposure and diagnosis. Mesothelioma usually doesn’t even begin to present symptoms for 20 years after the asbestos exposure, making it difficult to diagnose and track the cause or companies that may have caused the exposure.

Mesothelioma symptoms include chest pain, fluid in the chest, coughing, breathing difficulty, which means that many of these symptoms can easily be mistaken for other diseases or conditions. It is unfortunate but for most people, by the time they are diagnosed with Mesothelioma, it is much too late – traditional treatments for cancer such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are of little effect on the disease.

The fact of the matter is that most of the victims of Mesothelioma can blame someone, a company, a supervisor or a boss that knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure but failed to warn the workers or provide any safety precautions for the material. Mesothelioma is devastating physically, emotionally and financially. A Texas Mesothelioma attorney can help you with your case or the case of a loved one who has contracted Mesothelioma.

Only a Mesothelioma lawyer is capable of tracking down the causes of your exposure and is able to help you with a Mesothelioma lawsuit for financial compensation for you and your family. A Texas Mesothelioma attorney can link your exposure to your illness and fight for your rights for compensation for the contracting of the disease. While the money won’t replace a life, yours or a loved one, the financial compensation that you may be entitled to will help cover the medical costs, lost wages, funeral expenses and the pain and suffering of the victim throughout the disease.

Tesa Secure Laser Labels And Their Advantages

What is Tesa secure?

Tesa secure is a packaging standard involving the Tesa tapes. As compared to the conventional coding, and marking methods, Tesa secure offers a cutting-edge latest technologically advanced marking method. Tesa secure fits into the unique identification (UID) marking standard. Mostly used for extensively shipment items packaging, Tesa tapes are popular for their high enduring and durability nature. They are robust, sturdy, high shear as well as age resistant. They ensure safety and durability of the items during storage and transit stage. The Department of Defense (DoD) has mandated to use Tesa Secure 6973 PV 3 laser labels for packaging.

There are different categories of Tesa tapes available which have various usages depending upon the surface of the packaging items and the nature of the transportation. Let’s have a brief overview about the categories of Tesa tapes.

• Tesa Fastening Tapes
One of the most cost-effective and reliable tapes available; Tesa Fastening Tapes are frequently used for splicing, temporary fastening, permanent bonding as well as platemounting.

Asbestos Cancer Requires an Expert Lawyer

Asbestos cancer or mesothelioma is one of the most serious diseases impacting thousands of men and women worldwide. Due to realization of the fact that usage of asbestos has caused irreversible health damage, governments are now providing the necessary help to such cancer patients in the form of regulation and control. Hence, if one is suffering from asbestos cancer or if there is a loved one affected by the same, there are now many resources available for help. As the saying goes, “It heals faster if someone cares”, get help by helping yourself to find an effective asbestos cancer lawyer.

From the beginning of the twentieth century, the development of cancerous diseases due to asbestos exposure has been clearly observed. But the fight against mesothelioma started a much later. Today, there are a large number of quality asbestos cancer lawyers available. They are experts in their field and can help you get the best possible compensation in the shortest possible time for you and your family.

Just because there are many cancer lawyers available doesn’t mean that one should hire the first one. There are hundreds of cancer lawyers, and to decide how to hire the right one requires some research. One can find plenty of advertisements on television and on the internet. It is always advisable to check the credibility of the lawyers by taking a close look at their previous cases. Any reputable cancer lawyer would be happy to discuss with you and share general specifics of successful asbestos cancer cases, including compensations won, that their firm has handled.

A dedicated asbestos cancer lawyer is always seen to protect the rights of their clients and ensures that his or her clients get justice for the amount of pain they have undergone and lost income for them and their families, and medical bills.

Many times cancer lawyers will seek the help of investigative agencies to find out about the asbestos exposure which led to the disease affecting their clients. It is essential for them to have a full understanding of the potential asbestos exposure of their clients and what the employer did, or did not do to adequately protect the client. This research, many times tracking information from companies no longer in business, is very time consuming and is reflected in the costs charged by legal firms to represent asbestos victims. This is specifically why it is important to thoroughly research, use referrals and information guides to do your own research on the legal firm that will represent you.

Because of government’s intervention into the worldwide increase in asbestos cancer cases, cancer lawyers are becoming more and more comfortable in the outcome of their cases. Therefore, in many situations, law firms will accept cases based upon payment only if they should win the case. The cancer patient has little of no money out of pocket until the case is resolved and a financial award has been made. In many cases, experienced cancer lawyers are familiar enough with the cases, and in many times the actual companies involved, that they can conduct most of the work over the telehone with you. The research is done by the lawyers themselves and the patients would not even have to appear in court. This saves the patient’s energy and time and there is no emotional imbalance caused as well.

However, the importance of finding the right asbestos cancer lawyer is just as important as finding the right medical center and cancer doctor. Be prepared. Do your research. There is so much information on the television and the internet that it can become overwhelming very quickly. Talk to other cancer patients, their families, support groups. There are several very good cancer information guides available that have been compiled by non-law or medical firms, that can give you a totally unbias point of view and starting point for your research. If one has done the research to get the right lawyer, then he or she can trust them with all the legal proceedings to get the financial compensation they deserve.

Understanding the Importance of Water

Polluted water happens when toxins enter the water system, in the following ways.

* Get dissolved
* Suspended in the water
* Lie in the sediment.

Polluted water is caused by industrial dumping, sewage, intense farming and individuals, polluted water shows up in all types of water including wells streams reservoirs rivers and the ocean. Thoughtless acts of what can seem to be a cheap alternative (if you can call the planet cheap) occur in industry regularly, toxins including chemicals and heavy-metals are flushed into the rivers, streams and lakes causing polluted water.

Some examples of water pollution are:

The Asopos River in Greece should provide fresh water for a town on its banks but it runs red and/or purple due to the many different industries upstream dumping toxic chemicals into the river polluting water, it is unfit to drink, however the citizens have little choice. In China some Rivers are flowing contaminated, one is red and foamy with ammonia nitrogen and permanganate, China could be facing a water shortage, partly due to polluted water. According to the world health organization, the Indus River contains high amounts of pollutants due to industrial waste it is unfit for drinking. Bristol-Myers pharmaceutical company has continuously polluted waters of lake Syracuse pumping it with toxins, hopefully their huge fine will help stop this behavior. Peoples in Japan have died due to mercury poisoning from eating contaminated fish caught off their coast, and significant amount of ground water has been found contaminated in India, large amounts of pesticides have polluted groundwater, only small amount of their waste water is treated. More than a third of America’s rivers and Lakes are to polluted for fishing or swimming, there are millions of cases of water born diseases and deaths a year due to polluted water, carelessly discarded waste materials especially toxic ones have detrimental effect on any ecosystem that they enter, and then there is the oil sands project in Alberta it uses around 175 million liters of water a day this water is contaminated with many chemicals and is not reusable, this toxic soup is then stored in huge toxic waste ponds posing a threat to our environment ecosystems and wildlife.

So what do we do with the waste we produce? Can we find a ways to neutralize waste before it enters the ecosystem? Where it is possible not producing waste in the first place, efficient sewage processing plants are hard at work in many parts of the world, however sewage plants do not process water that goes down storm drains, industrial waste dumped directly in to water systems (especially that of the oil sands project).

Polluted water is found all around the globe, the Earth is three quarters water, less than 1% of that is fresh, the water that we use today is the same water that was used millions of years ago, it’s all connected, the planet has effectively been recycling it, but for how long can Earth sustain life with increasing amounts of polluted water?

Historically the preferred method for disposal of sewage has been to dump it into the ocean, large quantities of plastic debris, also ends up in the ocean, beaches are often closed due to polluted water, 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen are pumped into the gulf of Mexico causing areas of eutrophication and hypoxia. In California agriculture and cattle are included as a source of nitrate pollution affecting groundwater. Oklahoma has problems from excessive pig farming as they create a poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas from their waste lagoon’s, that suffer leaks and lethal spills. There are thousands of manufacturing facilities worldwide using water to carry away waste, infecting streams lakes and oceans, compounds can include asbestos phosphates nitrate mercury, lead sulfuric acid, caustic soda, sulfuric acid and petrochemicals. Thermal pollution with hot water from cooling towers is also a problem, this hot water waste is an inefficient use of power as the energy used to heat the water is lost, it could be harnessed.

Cruise ships holding thousands of people dump enormous amounts of very unsanitary waste water into the seas daily, affecting the oceans ecosystem greatly, there needs to be a solution for this water pollution, some major cruise lines have installed illegal bypass lines, depositing oil, sewage, garbage and other hazardous toxic wastes into the oceans and waterways, it is not only the cruise ships that dump waste overboard, causing polluted water.

Mesothelioma Can be Underestimated in Death Certificates

One problem that has plagued spouses of the deceased workers that were exposed to asbestos is showing that mesothelioma was the cause of death. There is some evidence to suggest that the incidence of mesothelioma has been grossly underestimated. One interesting study is called, “Validation of death certificates in asbestos workers” by
M. L. Newhouse, J. C. Wagner – Br J Ind Med 1969;26:302-307. Here is an excerpt: “Abstract – Newhouse, M. L., and Wagner, J. C. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 302-307. Validation of death certificates in asbestos workers. The Registrar General has supplied the certified cause of death of 436 past workers in an asbestos factory. An attempt was made to follow up the 301 (69%) deaths which had occurred in hospital or had been the subject of an inquest or coroner’s post-mortem examination. Necropsy reports were obtained for 158 (52%) of this group and histological material was reviewed in 84 (28%). The additional information, particularly that obtained from review of the histology, led to the revision and extension of the diagnosis suggested by the certified cause of death in a number of cases. The incidence of carcinoma of the bronchus had not been grossly underestimated, four additional tumours of this type were identified by scrutiny of the necropsy reports, and a further four by review of histological sections. The incidence of mesothelial tumours was underestimated, endothelioma or mesothelioma was the certified cause of death in four of the series, and a further 15 mesotheliomata were identified by review of histological material. Five patients with pleural mesotheliomata had been certified as dying of carcinoma of the lung or pleura. Ten deaths from peritoneal mesotheliomata had been attributed either to carcinomatosis without mention of a primary tumour or to cancer of the gastro-intestinal tract. Lung sections were submitted for review in 67 of the series; some degree of asbestosis was found in all but seven. Asbestosis graded as either moderate or severe was found in all the confirmed cases of carcinoma of the lung.”

Another interesting study is called, “Longitudinal changes in lung function among asbestos-exposed workers” by DA Schwartz, CS Davis, JA Merchant, WB Bunn, JR Galvin, DS Van Fossen, CS Dayton and GW Hunninghake – Am. J. Respir. Crit. Care Med., Vol 150, No. 5, 11 1994, 1243-1249. Here is an excerpt: “To prospectively identify the determinants of persistent or accelerated loss of lung function among workers occupationally exposed to asbestos and assess the relative contribution of cigarette smoking, asbestos- induced pleural fibrosis, and specific findings from bronchoalveolar lavage and high resolution CT scans, we examined the determinants of lung function changes in 117 subjects occupationally exposed to asbestos for at least 1 yr in a high exposure setting. A minimum of 20 yr was required between the first exposure to asbestos and entry into the study. Baseline studies included an independent assessment of dyspnea, lung volumes, diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO), a chest radiograph, a high resolution CT (HRCT) scan, and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Subjects were observed for an average of 2 yr (range, 0.5 to 4.0 yr), and lung function was measured on at least two separate occasions (mean, 4.1 separate tests).

During the period of observation, there was an average 1.5% decrease in the TLC and a 2.5% decrease in the DLCO. In this longitudinal data set, after controlling for age, height, pack-years of cigarette smoking, and follow-up time, persistently lower measures of TLC were independently related to moderate to severe dyspnea (p = 0.005), diffuse pleural thickening (p = 0.007), and higher concentrations of fibronectin in BAL fluid (p = 0.01). Interstitial lung disease either on the chest radiograph or HRCT scan was not independently associated with persistently lower measures of TLC during the period of observation. However, none of the clinical variables we examined were associated with an accelerated decline in TLC.”

Another study is called, “Malignant mesothelioma induced by asbestos and zeolite in the mouse peritoneal cavity” by Yasunosuke Suzuki, Norihiko Kohyama – Environmental Research – Volume 35, Issue 1, October 1984, Pages 277-292. Here is an excerpt: “Abstract – The carcinogenicity of asbestos (amosite and chrysotile) and zeolite (fibrous erionite, mordenite, and synthetic zeolite 4A) were studied in the peritoneum of 586 BALB/C male mice after a single intraperitoneal or intraabdominal wall injection. As controls, 182 mice treated with and without saline solution were used. Both asbestos types and fibrous erionite frequently produced malignant peritoneal tumors after long latency; tumors developed in 93 of 394 animals (23.6%) treated with asbestos or fibrous erionite 7 months or more after administration. All of the induced peritoneal tumors were intimately associated with marked peritoneal fibrosis, in which asbestos or erionite fibers were regularly detected. Histopathologically, 83 (73 fibrous, 9 biphasic, and 1 epithelial) of 93 were consistent with malignant mesotheliomas. Other tumors consisted of 6 plasmacytomas, 1 histiocytoma, 1 liposarcoma, 1 osteosarcoma, and 1 adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Two of the cases of mesotheliomas were associated with plasmacytoma. In many instances, the primary site of the mesotheliomas seemed to be multiple, the favorite sites being the omentum, mesentery, serosae of the gastrointestinal and genital organs, the diaphragm, the capsule of the liver and spleen, and the abdominal wall peritoneum.

In these cases, asbestos or erionite-tissue burden followed by fibrosis was frequently observed. In addition to the 93 peritoneal tumors, 3 extraperitoneal tumors (1 fibrosarcoma and 2 rhabdomyosarcomas) were induced by amosite which was probably accidentally injected into the extraperitoneal connective issue and the striated muscle tissue of the abdominal wall, respectively. These three tumors were also intimately associated with focal fibrosis in which amosite fibers were detected. Among the three different types of zeolite, only fibrous erionite showed striking carcinogenicity and marked fibrogenicity. The erionite-induced mesotheliomas were similar to those induced by asbestos in exhibiting long latency, in gross appearance, in histology, and in close association with fibrosis. Long-term persistence of asbestos or fibrous erionite around progenitor cells of the induced tumors and the consequent fibrosis seemed to be an important precondition of the malignant transformation of the progenitor cells.”

If you found any of these excerpts, please read them in their entirety. We all owe a debt of gratitude to these researchers.

My apartment smells weird and I can’t seem to air it out or clean it up. Any suggestions?

My building is old and stucco. My ceiling is asbestos and my walls have typical paint, covering the original lead paint. Every time I leave it for a few days, I come back and it smells gross–kind of like cigarette smoke. Then I open the windows and air it out and it gets less offensive, but the smell always lingers. I have scrubbed the floors and walls, shampooed the carpets several times, and air it out every day. I wish I could address the source of the smell. I am currently spraying it every so often with lysol’s Neutra Air, but the effects dissipate so quickly. Any suggestions?

The best way to get rid of the smells (apparently from previous tenants) is to have a professional cleaning company come in and blast the place with ozone. You do not want to be there during the process, since ozone is damaging to your lungs. The ozone has a 20 second lifespan, so you don’t have to worry about it lingering, but it will get rid of all of those smells. If you can’t find a company that does ozone blasting, you may want to purchase your own. The best on the market are made in USA at http://www.maxblasterusa.com/ You will ask for Tom Mankis (great guy) and he will be a big help to you. I hope this helps.

Free Resources Offered by Mesothelioma-Data.com Help Victims Learn More about Asbestos-Related Diseases

Houston, Texas, April, 2009 — Mesothelioma-Data.com gives visitors access to free data and information on mesothelioma, symptoms of the disease, and treatment options. Although access to the site’s complete resources is available online at no cost, visitors can also sign up to receive a free information packet and DVD containing the full data and statistics in one convenient package.

Mesothelioma-Data.com is one of the most comprehensive sources of mesothelioma information on the Internet. The site allows individuals to browse recent news items on mesothelioma, learn about the effects of asbestos on human health, peruse statistics on the disease, explore useful mesothelioma links, and make use of helpful resources pertaining to clinical trials, compensation, and veterans issues.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, which is caused by exposure to asbestos. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year in the United States.

Between 1970 and 1990, the incidence of mesothelioma cancers increased. Asbestos-related diseases stabilized after the 1990s, and now appear to be decreasing. In Europe and the rest of the world, mesothelioma rates are on the rise.

Mesothelioma is a serious disease that is difficult to treat. By the time a patient experiences symptoms and receives a diagnosis, the disease is usually already in advanced stages. However, advances in technology have helped improve prospects for patients that have been recently diagnosed.

Most cases of mesothelioma affect men aged 55 and over, and its incidence increases with age. 75% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma are over the age of 65. The disease affects men 5 times more often than women, and is most common in white Americans.

Mesothelioma affects the mesothelial cells that surround the lungs, heart, and stomach. Symptoms of the disease include dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain, malaise, and weight loss.

Mesothelioma is a difficult disease to treat. In most cases surgery is not possible because the tumor encases the lung in a large mass that invades the fissures and spreads to the diaphragm and chest wall. Chemotherapy and radiation have only proven helpful in rare cases. Fortunately, many patients have recovered because of new treatment options and earlier diagnosis.

Identifying Asbestos Fiber Location and its Impact on Tissue Injury

Numerous studies have examined asbestos fiber size, mass and concentration in an effort to determine their impact on disease development. One interesting study is called, “Establishment of a human in vitro mesothelial cell model system for investigating mechanisms of asbestos-induced mesothelioma.” By Y. Ke, R. R. Reddel, B. I. Gerwin, H. K. Reddel, A. N. Somers, M. G. McMenamin, M. A. LaVeck, R. A. Stahel, J. F. Lechner, and C. C. Harris - Am J Pathol. 1989 May; 134(5): 979–991. Here is an excerpt: “Normal human mesothelial (NHM) cells were transfected with a plasmid containing SV40 early region DNA. Individual colonies of transformed cells from several donors were subcultured for periods of 5 to 6 months and 60 to 70 population doublings (PDs) before senescence, in contrast to a culture lifespan of approximately 1 month and 15 PDs for NHM cells. One such culture, designated MeT-5A, escaped senescence and has been passaged continuously for more than 2 years. These cells had a single integrated copy of SV40 early region DNA in their genome, expressed SV40 large T antigen, and exhibited features of mesothelial cells including sensitivity to the cytotoxic effects of asbestos fibers. One year after injection subcutaneously or intraperitoneally in athymic nude mice, these cells remain nontumorigenic, and therefore are a potential model system for in vitro fiber carcinogenesis studies.”

Another interesting study is called, “Airway branching patterns influence asbestos fiber location and the extent of tissue injury in the pulmonary parenchyma.” By
Pinkerton KE, Plopper CG, Mercer RR, Roggli VL, Patra AL, Brody AR, and Crapo JD. Lab Invest. 1986 Dec;55(6):688-95. Here is an excerpt: “Abstract – The degree to which various anatomic components of the lung influence the distribution of inhaled particles is not entirely clear. Therefore, we have studied the role intrapulmonary airways play in the localization of respired asbestos fibers and have correlated local asbestos fiber burden with tissue injury in rats following exposure to aerosolized chrysotile asbestos for 7 hours per day, 5 days per week for 12 months. Tissues arising from anatomically distinct pathways of the tracheobronchial tree were isolated by using microdissection. Adjacent tissue blocks from regions immediately distal to the last dissected airway were prepared for light microscopic evaluation or digested in hypochlorite solution to determine alveolar septal tissue density and asbestos fiber concentration respectively. These studies demonstrated regional differences in asbestos fiber number, size, and mass which were inversely related to airway pathlength and to bifurcation number along each airway path. Fiber burden within each region was found to be proportional to the relative degree of tissue injury present. These findings suggest that differences in tissue injury from region to region in the lungs following exposure to asbestos are a result of regional differences in the deposition and retention of these substances in the lungs. These airway characteristics which influence fiber deposition may also play an important role in the deposition and subsequent lung injury caused by other particulates and environmental pollutants.

A third study is called, “Asbestos fiber content of the lungs in patients with and without asbestos airways disease.” By Churg A. – Am Rev Respir Dis. 1983 Apr;127(4):470-3. Here is an excerpt: “Abstract – I analyzed the total pulmonary asbestos burden in the lungs of 9 chrysotile miners who had asbestos airways disease (so-called “early asbestosis”) but no evidence of classic asbestosis (interstitial fibrosis) on pathologic examination. The results were compared with values found for 9 miners matched for age, sex, smoking, and work length who had no histologic evidence of asbestosis or asbestos airways disease. The mean value for chrysotile fibers in the airway disease group was 47 X 10(6)/g dried lung, compared with 23 X 10(6) in the group without lesions (p less than 0.04). For contaminant amphiboles, probably derived from the chrysotile ore (tremolite, actinolite, anthophyllite), the corresponding values were 106 X 10(6) versus 58 X 10(6) (p less than 0.06), and for total asbestos fibers, 153 X 10(6) versus 81 X 10(6) (p less than 0.06). There was a strong correlation between amount of chrysotile and amphibole for each case, suggesting that the amphibole was probably a good measure of the original (but no longer present) chrysotile burden. No differences were seen between the 2 groups with regard to fiber size distribution, aspect ratios, or fiber widths. I conclude that the overall differences in fiber concentration between the 2 groups, although significant, are sufficiently small enough to suggest that other factors may be involved in the genesis of small airway lesions.”

If you found any of these excerpts interesting, please read the studies in their entirety. We all owe a debt of gratitude to these researchers.

It was probaly part of the carpet itself, can’t imagine why it would have been in the glue, unless it was to add body to a liquid. Asbestos is a naturally occuring fiber.
