Asbestos Wall Plaster
Asbestos in plaster walls?
My house is over 100 years old with horse-hair plaster walls. I’m wanting to remodel but concerned about the possibility of asbestos. Did they use asbestos in plaster at that time, and should I have it tested?
Asbestos can be found in plaster, sheetrock, joint compound, and skim coat. However, I have never seen it in horse hair plaster. It would not make sense to have it in both since the purpose of the horse hair and the asbestos is to do the same thing (bind the material). There may be asbestos in the skim coat or joint compound though. Best bet is to have each wall component tested.
