Asbestos Statement

am i being screwed from my lawyer?
asbestos case (dead husband 1988) few claims from several co.but promised $0000 of dollars says they are in bankruptcy. small claims around $1000but i never knew for sure the co. only their printed name on my check from my lawyers. he says he can not get dr. statements about my husband, the dr. has died since then also.
You haven’t given enough information. Lawyers commonly misrepresent your chances of substantial payment in order to get the business.
There is a file. You have a right to see it. Send your lawyer a registered letter telling him you insist on seeing the file.
It is true that many or most asbestos-using firms filed convenient Chapter 11s to get out from under their liability. Much of the liability was left with insurance companies, and much of that was reinsured by Lloyd’s of London (or, more exactly, Equitas, a reinsurance vehicle recently the target of Warren Buffet), where it sits.
Congress was toying with a bill to limit liability for asbestosis/mesthelioma, and to apportion it equiably. But like so much else of the last Congress, ,many victims argued that it was crooked, and a cheat.
You haven’t given me enough information to judge. I haven’t seen the retainer letter between you (or your husband) and the lawyer. But the above are my intiial comments.
My condolences, and my best wishes.
(I have seen what others wrote. Do they really think that “good lawyers” work for free? If I weren’t retired I wouldn’t be spending my time on Y! Q/A. You can easily bankrupt yourself going from lawyer to lawyer, just as people do going from doctor to doctor. Be careful; be wise.)
