Asbestos Fireplace

Asbestos in my house… HELP!?

I just read an article on asbestos and did some research on it… I then looked right beside me and I have a fireplace with a fluffy, wooly material that surrounds it.

I found a picture that looks VERY similar to what I have and it is definetly asbestos

My house is over 35 years old and I have been living here for 10 years and spending A LOT of time in this room

I understand that asbestos is only spread if disturbed… there is a window right beside my fireplace and im pretty sure the wind is likely spreading fibres around

I do not have any respitory problems but it is said to take 10 – 40 years to develop

I am nervous now.. how do I get rid of this stuff without disturbing it… and what if there is more?

what should i do?

You need a licensed asbestos consultant and a licensed removal contractor (not the same company – look in phone book). The consultant will come in and actually take samples for testing. It is possible it is not asbestos since testing is the ONLY way to confirm it and home fireplaces are less likely to have it. It sounds more like rock wool from your description. If it is asbestos, the consultant can recommend a contractor to remove it. Never try removal yourself.
