Asbestos Exposure Limits
Should I rent an apartment with an asbestos warning?
I live in California. An apartment I’m thinking about renting has a warning required by proposition 65.
The warning says my apartment contains asbestos and other harmful chemicals in the building materials and in “emissions, fumes, and smoke from resident and guest activities including but not limited to use of motor vehicles, barbecues, and tobacco products. Disturbance of or damage to interior apartment surfaces may increase the potential for exposure to these substances”.
Should I be concerned? Does this mean if I turn on the heater these harmful chemicals will be released?
I would be very concerned. I don’t think using the heater will make the problem any worse. These fumes and particles that are health concerns are probably already in the air. I have never lived in California, but knowing their strict emission guidelines for cars, I would be surprised that it is legal in that state to rent someone an apartment with asbestos and chemical problems.
