barbecue’s and smoking a paradox?

a freind of mine who is a smoker,told me at a barbecue he was not going to eat any meat because he heard on the news that the meat may give you cancer in the future ,due to the way the food is cooked.
Well to knowledge smoking has a proven link to cancer yet he dismissed this as “i have been smoking for 20 years and i haven’t had cancer ”
can anybody explain to me why some smokers won’t eat food that may give you cancer or they would not enter a room with asbestos in it, without ppe equipment ,or they won’t eat some frozen food (a few year ago when their might be a link to cancer ),but they will smoke which can and does cause cancer.

Cancer is cancer, wherever it appears in the body. Smoking does not necessarily cause cancer in all smokers. I know two non-smokers who died of lung cancer. I also know plenty of smokers in their 80’s who are as fit as fiddles.
If smoking was REALLY that bad it would be banned, wouldn’t it? The use of asbestos is banned isn’t it?
