Asbestos Attic Insulation

Does sawdust insulation have asbestos?
My wife and I bought a 1941 house and in the attic it has saw dust insulation with small shinny flakes of vermiculite. I went up in the attic to remove some blue tarps and kicked up a lot of dust, but I was only in the room for no more than 5 minutes without a particle mask and 5 with one on. So what are my risks in removing this insulation to replace with modern insulation? Should I have it tested? Should I buy a shop vac and do the job myself?
You should have it tested. It is the ONLY way to know if the material is asbestos. You can find a lab in your yellow pages. It will cost $10-$35 depending on where you are. Call the lab first for sampling instructions. The key is to get a core sample since there may be layers.
If it is asbestos, you need to have it professionally removed. If non-asbestos, you need to wear the best dust mask you can find. Professional removal might still be a good idea. Dust can also be a problem if you are exposed.
